Persuasive essay on obesity
English persuasive essay

While many scots are healthy and exercise regularly, there is a growing number of adults and children becoming obese. It is costing the NHS millions to deal with the problems that it causes. We are having serious concerns about the number of people becoming ill and being unable to work, because of our overweight scots.

It's no secret that obesity is a huge issue. The causes of this problem can be social, economic and cultural, all of which determine how much food we eat, and the kind of food we eat, against how much exercise we do. Affecting the entire world, Scotland is one of the worst countries by percentage. According to professionals, "40% of adults in Scotland will be obese by 2030". 40%?! These figures are ridiculous, almost half the country obese in a few short years? Fatty and unhealthy foods. Served in every shop, in every town, in every country. Foods that damage the body, you just can’t get away from them. Being obese puts unnecessary strain on the heart, making the heart pump faster because of the increased amount of body fat. As a result this can cause high blood pressure.

Likewise it has been proven that being obese greatly increases your chances of getting type 2 diabetes. It is also a contributing factor to some people getting cancer. Why would anyone let themselves get like that? Obesity can cause diseases but is not a disease itself. It can harm the body and stop it from properly working, like a disease, but it can be cured unlike some diseases. Anyone who is obese can return to a healthy lifestyle, with enough determination, so why are people overweight?

Accordingly, one of the worst penalties obesity causes are physical restrictions. Even the simplest things such as taking a shower can be made difficult. However it can also prevent movement on the inside of the body. As the excess fat accumulates, it puts pressure on the major organs and cause difficulties with things that most people don’t usually have problems with, such as breathing.

Out of all the diseases and problems in the world, obesity, the easiest to cure problem, was declared a worldwide epidemic by WHO in 2011. A global epidemic? Such an easy problem to solve in comparison to diseases such as HIV. Earlier it was seen as a disease for richer countries, but has been recognised globally with at least 14% of every countries population being overweight. There is a need to make the public aware about this increasing problem, outdoor sports and activities should be encouraged by both schools and parents to tackle the rising cases of childhood obesity.
In rare cases, obesity can be caused by rare medical conditions such as crushing’s syndrome which causes the over production of certain steroid hormones. Weight gain can also be caused by certain medicines such as anti-depressants, and can be side effects from taking the combined birth control pill and quitting smoking.

The campaign we will be presenting is about obesity. In Sandwell, especially Smethwick; the number of children who are considered obese is 893 and the local value for this number is 25.9 where the England average is 19.0 and England’s worst is 26.5 ( as you can see the Sandwell figure is very close to England’s worst). These children are much more likely to develop health problems such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure from a young age, which are linked with cardiovascular diseases in adults.…

The past twenty years has seen obesity rates in the UK increase dramatically (HSCIC, 2013), resulting in the reduction and prevention of obesity becoming a major public health priority. The World Health Organisation (WHO) (2013) defines obesity as ‘abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health’ and body max index (BMI) is commonly used in the classification of overweight and obesity. A BMI of 25-29 makes an individual overweight and a BMI of 30 or above is classified as obese (WHO, 2013). A concerning statistic showed that in 2011 a mere 34% of men and 39% of women were defined as being a healthy weight; with a BMI between 18.5 and 25 (NHS, 2013), compared with rates in 1993 where 44% of men and 50% of women fell into this category (HSCIC, 2013). The Health Survey for England in 2010 (NHS: The Information Centre, 2012) stated that 62.8% of adults and 30.3% of children are overweight or obese, with 26.1% of these adults and 16% of these children being obese. Obesity is a major risk factor for the development of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, some cancers and may be detrimental to certain social aspects of life, such as finding work and can affect mental health (Department of Health, 2013). As a result of these obesity trends in 2011 it was found that approximately half of obese men and women suffered from high blood pressure and there were nearly 12,000 admissions to hospital for obesity related illnesses in 2011-2012, which had increased more than 11 times compared with figures in 2001-2002 (NHS, 2013). In 2007, the Foresight Report (Department of Health, 2007) predicted that without action being taken 60% men, 50% and 25% children would be obese by 2050. Alongside these serious implications for health and quality of life, obesity is a growing burden on…

It goes without saying that many Americans struggle with excessive weight, most of which can be addressed early on in life. According to the Centers for Disease Control website, more than one third of adults in the U.S. were obese in 2010 (CDC.gov), which shows that obesity is one of the biggest healthcare problems the U.S. faces today. It creates a growth in healthcare costs because it causes so many other problems in individuals, most of which are life threatening. For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website also states that obesity can lead to diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, cancer, high cholesterol, stroke, and respiratory problems (CDC.gov). At any age, being overweight or obese can also cause emotional problems as well, like low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety.…
