amazed that I saw no one was cheering for them. The next year my team made the championship again, but this time I was playing my old team as I had willingly gone to the other team to prove to people that the underdog had the ability to win. We did, in fact, surprise everyone and defeat the defending champions. This was the time where I was most proud of a victory and wanted to continue to prove people wrong about an underdog. Now, I defend those bad teams that people want to laugh at. When people ask “Who is your favorite NFL team,” a majority of the time they laugh at my answer. The Cleveland Browns are my favorite NFL team. With a one and fifteen record, the Browns have not only been at the bottom of the league in the 2015-2016 season but for many past seasons as well. Despite always getting very high draft picks, the Browns have always managed to pick the wrong players for their unique situations. These players aren’t able to contribute to wins for the team and end up being wasted draft picks. Some recent examples of bad picks include Johnny Manziel and Trent Richardson. Johnny Manziel was only in the league for two years because he failed to positively impact the Browns.
My relationships have grown because my love for the Browns is a great conversation starter. For example, I will be walking in a store and someone will see my lanyard and ask “Do you really like the Browns?” I have grown accustomed to this question and every time I politely say “Why yes I do and always will.” It is incredible at the amount of people who are curious why someone would cheer for a team projected to lose. However, once a person knows that I am a Browns fan, the jokes often stop, and they are very accepting. No one wants to be seen as a loser and may not like the Browns because of their record, but often people feel bad for a team who always seems to do things wrong. When we pick our favorite teams we often pick the ones that will win the most.
We pick the ones that will let us win vicariously, so that we may feel a sense of pride when they win. Picking a winning team brings us pride, but often picking a losing team will bring us more pride when they do well then a team that often wins. When someone’s favorite team is the Patriots, they often get upset when they lose. Cheering for a team that loses so often makes me even more excited when they win. Picking a team that is an underdog builds acceptance when they lose but feel pride when they beat a team that out ranks them. Being supportive of the Browns when they are at their worst will one day be more rewarding to me than cheering only for the winners. Even though it has been a long road full of upset, I believe that the Browns win the Super Bowl one day and I will be able to say that I believed in
them.
