“No one in the community was starving, had ever been starving, would ever be starving.” (Lowry 89). The Community in The Giver is called a utopian society, what is a utopian society? Webster Dictionary says, “an imaginary place in which the government, laws, and social condition are perfect...” Even though they may be “perfect”, utopian societies never really work out, and usually people have to take risks in order to change the society. In the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas takes risks by, helping family members, doing what he thinks is right, and helping friends see the truth.…
According to Lois Lowry, “ Submitting to censorship is to enter the seductive world of The Giver: the world where there are no bad words and no bad deeds. But it is also the world where choice has been taken away and reality distorted. And that is the most dangerous world of all.” (Lowrey)…
While there are many themes that are present in "The Giver" and "Harrison Bergeron", one theme stands out. That theme is, memories are important and if they're lost, they can cause pain.…
Censorship, limits on personal freedoms, and their societies distaste for literature are all issues addressed in Ray Bradbury's novel titled Fahrenheit 451. Not only does Bradbury's novel engage itself in these issues but as well as The United States First Amendment, and article from February 2013 on censorship, and an original poem by Billy Collins called "Rain" all intertwine with each other. Although in a free society there should not be any censorships, but yet most free societies have them. There are many benefits and dangers when it comes to censorships in a free society. Censorships that are in free societies are not really free, but a restricted society.…
Presented in the book entitled Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield rebels against what life has to offer. Symbolized throughout the book, Holden shows his many dislikes towards the normal actions of a human being. The normal things that take place in society seem to irate Holden. Stated in chapter two, Holden says “People always think something’s all true.” Holden is explaining his frustration of the lack of education towards things people say and do. Holden tends to see the bigger picture, and the smaller details. Also stated in chapter two of Catcher in the Rye, Holden states “People never notice anything.” This also shows Holden’s great attention to detail. Holden notices the little things; he notices the little girl, later on in the book, that is having…

No right is truly unlimited journalist Roger Rosenblatt would argue. Author Rosenblatt narrates “everyone loves free expression as long as it isn’t exercised” (501) in “We Are Free to Be You, Me, Stupid and Dead” as part from his essay collection titled Where We Stand: Thirty Reasons for Loving Our Country published in 2002. Rosenblatt informs his audience about the very controversial and objectionable value of freedom of expression, and what negative costs can ultimately stem from censoring language. Rosenblatt uses his credibility where he appeals to the every man/women reader’s emotions and logic criticizing any censorship on free expression, emphasizes the defending right on freedom of speech given by the Constitution. However, Rosenblatt includes many examples of the limitations placed on our free expression. Rosenblatt successfully engages…
If you think about it, many other people have a different society than others. These societies have positive attributes and negative ones as well. In the novel “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton, the clip “On the Road: Middle School Football” with Steve Hartman; the poem “The World Is Not a Pleasant Place to Be” by Nikki Giovanni, it gives us positive information about Ponyboy’s society, Keith’s society; the society described in the poem. And knowing how their society is positive might change the way you think forever.…
4. At this part of The Catcher In the Rye, Holden is talking to Phoebe about his possible future careers, however his choice in career reflects Holden's affinity for all things innocent and his will to a protector of them. Holden remembers a part of a Robert Burns poem incorrectly as "if a body catch a body coming through the rye" this causes him to imagine himself saving children by "catch[ing] them" before they "go over the cliff." Ironically, the poem itself is about casual sex, yet Holden interprets it differently in a much more innocent manner. He believes that someone must save the children before they fall off the cliff. The children represent innocence and Holden wants to save the children before they fall off the cliff and enter into the pit of adulthood and a world full of phonies. As Holden himself struggles with realizing his own future, he does not realize that he also wants to be saved from the…
Ray Bradbury's book, Fahrenheit 451, is a good example of how censorship creates fear and ignorance in a society. It also shows how a government tries to maintain control over its people through censorship. What history has shown us through the years, however, is instead of bringing people together, control tactics like these, have actually divided societies and torn people apart. As a society we have learned that one person or a group of people can not fully control another group of people. As in Fahrenheit 451, even when a person completely censors what information people are allowed to have, they still have free will. They will still seek out others to share information with. In fact it can give them a stronger will to fight against censorship, as Montag did in Fahrenheit 451. people believe that censorship has proven to do more harm than good. Some examples of this throughout history are, the Nazi book burning, the Qin Dynasty book burning, and the Roman Inquisition.…
Classic literature is now under fire from many school districts because of the content within the books. High schools are discussing on wether to include classical books that contain sensitive material, such as, Catcher In The Rye in their curriculums for the safety of their students. Although many critics think that profanity is excessive, The Catcher In The Rye should be included in high school curriculums to provide realistic language that is used frequently in society.…

The great Yogi Berra once said, “If the world was perfect, it wouldn’t be.” A perfect world won’t be perfect without some key objects or qualities. To live in a perfect world, you would need to give up your choices. In my opinion, giving up your choices to live in a perfect world will not be worth it at the end. If we lost our choices, we would lose the vision of seeing color, allowing your parents to choose your name, and knowing your true birthdate.…
Censorship protects our children from seeing what could possibly damage them mentally and keeps things that should not be seen in public to stay in the shadows. Many people hate censorship because they think it takes away their freedom of speech. It doesn’t because as long as the people don’t say things that should be said they won’t be censored. Censorship stops things from being seen that shouldn’t be. Censorship is a necessity for the new…
The UN Convention on the rights of the child article 28 says that ''Every child has the right to an education'' article 2 says'' The convention applies to every child whatever their ethnicity, gender, religion, abilities, whatever they think or say, no matter what type of family they come from''. Schools have a duty to adhere to this legislation, they way that they do this is by adopting anti-discriminatory and inclusive practices. In order for us to promote these practices we must firstly understand how they impact on children and young people and what would happen if we did not promote them.…
