Should College Be for Everyone
What is the purpose to be a student in college? Getting into university regarded as the best option after graduating from high school. But not everyone has ability to finish up four-year course of college. Even graduated from university, it doesn’t mean the nice job and perfect income. “Each decade, 30 million graduate from high school but only 6 million receive a college degree.”(Buffenbarger) Part of them can not be accepted by college, and others drop out half way of university. However, redundant number of these graduates or unqualified graduates will also place the burden to society. For United States, the society needs a large amount of bachelor degree or even higher degree to devote to the society, because contemporary society demand high-educated people instead of labor. But for China, the society need more labor force than white-collar. If a student is not graduated from a famous university, he or she may just be hired to type documents and answer calls. He or she doesn’t need to spend so much time and money to finish four-year courses. The number of students who graduated from university is over the demand of the society, which causes the increase of percentage of unemployment. It also brings the burden to society. Another problem is whether everyone is able to finish the course of college. Several colleges lower the requirements of recruiting students, because they need more money to expand campus or to improve the technology of school, which resulted in unqualified graduates or students drop off on the half way of university, wherever in China or in America. The money provided by government can not run university well, so they have to make money in other way to maintain the running of university. The most important resource is teacher. The number of teacher is not enough to offer favorable education to students. Because of the limited number of teachers, each teacher has to charge over hundreds of students. As a student,you may have three hundred classmates for one course. Teacher even will not know who you are after one semester. So teachers can’t figure out the situation of each student. Teacher even can’t check the homework of every student. In China, the increasing number of students is twice than the increase number of teachers. Not only teacher but also money and physical resource are not enough to offer more and more students. The classrooms are not big enough to afford students and dormitories have no enough space for students. So universities have to expand the space of school. The income of college is only from support of government and tuition of students. College loads money from bank but the limited income even can’t afford the monthly interest. College has no ability to afford huge burden. Because of it, they enroll more students and get more money. Colleges lower the requirements for students. It is a bad cycle.
