A lot has been said and written about the rivalry between the popular TV shows
The Voice and American Idol. Being the top two reality singing competition shows
America has today, both are set out to find new talents that will give them tremendous popularity and international stardom. Even though American Idol first aired almost fourteen years ago, five years ago the American series premier of The Voice grabbed a lot of viewers attentions. Essentially, The Voice took everything that American Idol did in it’s early stages and improved upon it. The Voice’s welcoming format, supportive judges, and tasteful song selection is what has made millions of American’s fall in love with this shows entertainment.

John de Mol, creator of The Voice has given hopeful singers the opportunity to
achieve their dreams in the most welcoming way. “The show 's innovative format features five stages of competition: the first begins with the Blind Auditions, followed by the Battle Rounds, the Knockouts, the Live Playoffs and finally, the Live Performance
Shows” (“About” NBC). During the Blind Auditions, the musical coaches get to hear the artists perform but don’t get to see them due to rotating chairs. This allows the decisions from the coaches to be based solely on the performers voice and not on looks. The push of a powerful button will turn the coaches chairs around when they are impressed and the choice of who the singer wants to be mentored by is now in their hands. In addition, anyone over the age of fifteen is eligible to participate in the application process, while other singing competition shows have a cut off around a persons late twenties.
