I believe the author does a very good job of informing the reading audience of how our society deem tattooing as a misfit’s act. The essay also includes very insightful information regarding how people stereotype tattoos as a sign of a person with an unstable background. The information presented raises a few great questions, “Why, with these preconceived stereotypes do people still choose ink when it may contradict who they are as a person, what they may represent and why they have chosen to tattoo their body?” The essay also has a very interesting statistic. What canvas holds some of the most creative artwork today? If you guessed the human skin, you would be right. However, about three decades ago, one would only find these types of markings and insignias on what would be considered the “rough” crowd: bikers, sailors, gang members, and prison inmates. Today; however, tattoos and piercings can be seen on nearly anyone from the age of 15 and up. Not to mention, these body modifications can be found on all types of workers, male or female, white and blue-collar. Even though times have changed and opinions along with it, the workforce is still making a firm stand to some older thoughts. Although, body art has become a more accepted form of individualistic expression; it will continue to suppress individuals’ chances of succeeding in a professional environment, because employers, clients, and customers still have a negative connotation associated with the presence of tattoos and piercings.…

David Brooks’ “Nonconformity is Skin Deep” argument that tattooing is becoming a social trend is persuasive; he backs this by stating that tattoos are everywhere, inescapable. He wants us to assume that behind every judge, teacher, lawyer, housewife, etc lurks ink. Brooks makes a mockery of the “tattoo fad” by writing, “these are expressions of commitment…they don’t always work out…but the longing for permanence is admirable” (Brooks).…

Let’s start by picking your brain for a moment. If I were to ask you what your opinions were towards tattooing, what would your answer be? You may be surprised to know that within our society today, regardless of what your answer was, we could assume that people are divided based on each alternating view of tattoos. Some bring a more stereotypical view in that tattoos may pose a negative factor when trying to land that perfect job. Perhaps that it may symbolize that they are part of a gang, a “biker” if you will, maybe a criminal or part of a lower class in society? (Proehl 2004) Tattooing may also instill fear…

The effects of them are only obvious; one will have them, generally, for the rest of their life. Most piercings can close completely when taken out later. Tattoos, on the other hand hold a much greater promise of permanence. They can be laser treated off; however it is both painful and costly, usually at least double of the tattoo itself. In support of Martin’s reasoning, the tattoo I am having laser treated is my smallest one and was done spur of the moment. There was no thought or consideration, as it was more of a getting a tattoo for the sake of getting a…

The quiet hum of needles is a comforting sound to some people. They see it as a way to finally be able to show people who they are, and what they have been to, without having to tell them. The feeling of needles being stabbed into skin over and over and over again may hurt, but they see it as a small price to pay for a few hours or days in exchange for a beautiful piece of artwork that they can carry around with them for a lifetime. The view people have on tattoos today is divided, with some people who think they are pieces of art and forms of self expression that take a lot of time and money, or as markings that only criminals and ‘lower class citizens’ would get, something that lowers your self worth. Tattoos shouldn’t be seen as bad or gross,…
