Millions of dogs, cats, mice and rats are subjected to medical research every year and according to Humane Society International, ‘animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force-feeding, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of physical restraint and the infliction of burns, pains and other wounds to study the healing process’. All of this torture to apparently ‘help’ our society. Due to the lack of environmental enrichment and daily fear and pressure, this so-called “disposable lab equipment” living in these conditions are prone to develop a neurotic type of behaviour. Symptoms include spinning in circles, pulling out fur or feathers and rocking back and forth. This is understandable as living in an environment like that would be psychologically traumatizing to anyone, even us. Whilst you spent your day at school yesterday, 1,675 animals were killed in the name of science according to the Herald Sun. The most saddening thing about this number is that it’s not a worldwide total or even the number killed in Australia. This number shockingly is the amount of animals killed every day in Victoria alone! Think about those countries whose animal testing laws are more lenient. How can anyone not see the obvious flaws and cruelty of animal
