T.S. Eliot once said, “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” Don’t we owe it to humanity to see how far we can go by continuing research and finding cures and medical advancements to help mankind? In order for humans to live and for progress to be made in the form of medical breakthroughs, it is imperative that animal testing continues.
First of all, it is imperative to continue animal testing because animal research has played a vital role in giving us many medical advancements and medical miracles. For example, in the article “Four Animal Laboratories Open their Doors to the Public” Joan Ryan stated, “Animal research has played a crucial part in almost every medical breakthrough of the last century. It has saved hundreds of millions of lives worldwide.” Thanks to animal research, mostly with mice, cancer survival rates have continued to rise. For example, Herceptin, a humanized mouse protein, has helped increase the survival rate of people with breast cancer. In addition, diabetics rely on insulin which was developed through experiments on rabbits and dogs. Also, we have research on animals to thank for the development of Highly Active Anti-Retrovival Therapies (HAART). The …show more content…
For example, the article “Animal Testing has a purpose” states, “Today the (Food and Drug Administration) FDA sets higher standards for drug testing. Before a drug can even make it to the animal testing stage, it must first pass metabolic studies that prove the drug will be safe in human tissue. These new regulations are designed to save human lives.” This shows that animal testing is necessary to find cures, and save lives and we as people are making laws to do what is safe, right and responsible to get the answers we need. Animals are being used for testing in a thoughtful way. When a drug is approved to be tested on an animal, animal tests are done. If the results show a drug can help, it is then tested on humans. So if we are willing to test humans to find new ways of curing diseases, why wouldn’t we use animals too? The only way to move forward and find cures is to do research. Laws made by the FDA have made it safer and more responsible to test animals, and therefore this must
