Persuasive Speech On Drinking And Driving
At the age of 16 we get our license. With one simple test we get a card that says were allowed to drive. We get in an over 4,000-pound object and move it around at 60 miles per hour. This causes around 8 teen deaths per day, making car accidents the leading cause of teen death. We get behind a wheel, we get distracted, we cause an accident, and just like that someone loses a child. At 18 we're allowed to smoke. We put a different combination of 4,000 chemicals in our bodies for no specific purpose. This includes 43 unknown compounds that are cancer causing and 400 other toxins. But the cancer doesn’t appear immediately, the cigarettes are addictive. You wake up in the morning and crave one. You can't get through a meal without thinking about one. You …show more content…
Yet everyone seems to realize the danger of drinking when we are 21. We are allowed to do this new and exciting thing, drink. Then when we are done, we do something that doesn't cross our minds as dangerous. We get in our cars. We've been doing it for 5 years now, we don’t even have to think about it. 10,265 people died due to drinking and driving in 2015 alone. And 1.1 million people were arrested for driving while intoxicated. What I believe should be done to fix this problem is to change the legal ages for drinking and driving. The drinking age should be 16. At this age the body is developed most of the way so that there would not be growth impairment. The child would be under their parent's supervision still so that the drinking would be in a safe and contained environment. This would also take the danger away from teens having to sneak out to parties to drink. The driving age should be 18. By then, the excitement of drinking has died down. Also, they are a bit more grown before they get behind the wheel. I believe that this would make the rate of deaths by drunk drivers go down. It would also make the teen death rate from vehicle accidents in general go

Teen drinking it's been around hmmm... forever? A handful of teens gather around in some kids basement who's parents don't truly love them and drink that devil sauce. I was scrolling through the Reddits, and came across this article, "Alcohol use, binge drinking continues to fall among underage, reports finds". I honestly didn't believe it, I've only remember hearing bad stuff about my generation. Like how we're more lazier than the past generations, higher pregnancy among teens, not as capable as others. BUT look at us now! We don't love the sauce as much as you guys(past generations)!…

Each year, there is talk as to whether underage is that big of deal and if the drinking age should be lowered, raised, or just remain the same. I feel as if underage drinking is not okay and many unnecessary deaths are caused each year because of teens engaging in underage drinking. If anything, raising the drinking age to twenty five years of age would help ensure less deaths due to drunk driving or DUI’s. Therefore, laws against underage drinking should still be enforced and the drinking age should be raised in order to prevent more death or any other negative effects associated with underage drinking. Now, there are many reports of deaths due to underage drinking.…

The problem is the people question why the drinking age is 21 and not 18 when can you buy tabaco legally at the age of 18 and you can’t buy alcohol at 18 too. I believe the drinking age should be 21 because teen’s brains are not done growing at the age of 18 and they could be damaged. My first reason is that when the law was moved to 21 the drunk driving dropped. My second reason is that when teens start drinking at such a young age they can have several health problems when they get older so by making it 21 it will lower the risk of having health problems when you get older. My third reason is that teens could become violent or have destructive behaviors.…

For instance, other research shows that the younger children and adolescents are when they start to drink, the more likely they will be to engage in behaviors that harm themselves and others (NIH). This confirms that having a bad behavior at or under the age of 21 can lead to people getting harmed, harassed, or even killed. Also, driving under intoxication can lead to major car accidents and people can get hurt or even die. Another example is, frequent binge drinkers (nearly 1 million high school students nationwide) are more likely to engage in risky behaviors, including using other drugs, having sex, and earning grades that are mostly D's and F’s in school (NIH). This proves that people can get sexually assaulted while intoxicated and don't even know. You can also be failing your class or classes because alcohol can start deacon functioning your brain and be unintelligent, if you keep on continuing and not stopping at all. The minimum drinking should be raised to 25 because young adults are more expected to abuse and/or even murder themselves or others by consuming above-mentioned to…

Having the drinking age at twenty-one is just right because it is not to young and not to old, it is in the middle. If you are able to go to prison at the age of eighteen, provide for a family, purchase cigarettes, and file taxes you should be able to consume alcohol at the age of twenty-one. Keeping the legal age to drink at this age “has lowered traffic accidents and fatalities.” (The Leading Source for Pros and Cons of Controversial Issues) Rising the age will cause more illegal drinking for those under the legal age, and more problems. “The rational part of a teen’s brain does not fully develop until the age of twenty-five”, although this is true people who are older than twenty-five still struggle with alcohol in their system, and cause fatal accidents as well. (University of Rochester Medical Center) After the fact that alcohol hurts everyone in the same way might as well just leave the drinking age at twenty-one. Instead of rising the age, there should be more classes on how to control your alcohol…

I also believe that the drinking age should be lowered because when one turns eighteen years old they are considered an adult. At the age of eighteen one is able to make his/her on decision. I have come to the conclusion that the legal drinking age should be changed to eighteen. But drunk driving is the one big factor why people do not want to change the legal drinking age to eighteen years old. In this instance there would be a risk of many more deaths in America due to drunk driving. The reason would be that if underage drinkers could consume alcohol they would not have to be forced to drive from authorities. In the case I would support the legal age of twenty-one. Drunk driving is a very big concern to a lot of people and keeping the age at twenty-one would reduce drunk drivers on the road as opposed to eighteen. If the age were lowered to eighteen there would be less conflict with higher authorities such as parents and police officers.…

More than twenty one thousand lives have been saved with the drinking age being twenty one. For about 10 years in the early 1900’s, our country ratified the 18th amendment which banned the production and consumption of alcohol. This amendment led to extreme crime, violence, and even speakeasies. Our country realized that it wasn’t the best idea for prohibition, and we then ratified the 21st amendment that repealed the 18th amendment. The 21st amendment has helped prevent car related tragedies in the 18-20 age group while they were under the influence. I believe the alcohol age should not change because of it reducing crashes, the fact that your brain is more developed and you understand your limits, and a change in New Zealand’s drinking to age 18 has spiked the percentage of alcohol related crashes.…

10,076 people were killed last year due to drunk driving. Drunk driving is one of the major problems that comes with alcohol, and as the years go on, more and more teens are choosing to drink even though it is in fact illegal. So this brings up the question, should the legal drinking age of alcohal be lowered to 18 years old? Many people around the nation state that teens of 18 years old are developed enough to not get affected by alcohol, that it would decrease binge drinking, and that teens would have to be private about drinking and could do it in more supervised, safe environments. But, after research, it is clear to see these claims are not true or reasonable. The legal drinking age should definitely not be lowered because of the negative medical effects, the lack of responsibility and control of teens, and the more overall teenage drinkers.…

Over the years, the world has seen a rapidly increasing number of teen involvement in drunk and reckless driving cases, specifically from the time periods 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. A 12 a.m. curfew on weekends and a 10 p.m. curfew on weekdays would help to protect teens and others on the roads late at night from getting into troublesome or dangerous situations. In my town of Leesburg, Virginia, a 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. curfew is placed on anyone under the age of 18 on all days of the week. The curfew is used to minimize the amount of inexperienced teens on the road during hours where driving can be difficult due to things like fatigue and/or the influence of illegal substances. Many teens don't see the risks of driving under the influence of alcohol late at night or driving late at night at…

Because underage drinking is a major problem for young adults, the drinking age has become a very controversial issue. In the 1990's, the drinking age was 18, but it was changed to 21 in 1984. The Federal Government informed states to choose between raising the drinking age to 21 or foregoing highway funding. This decision obviously affected 18 to 20 year olds who could no longer buy alcoholic beverages. As in every controversy, there are supporters on both sides. Some argue that at the age of 18, when young adults are able to fight in war and get married, they should be able to make the decision to have a drink. Others say that at the age of 18, the brains of young adults are in a process of developing and they may not be responsible enough to drink. Would lowering the drinking age to 18 years be safer for young adults here in the United States?…

Alcohol consumption is the third leading actual cause of death in the United States, a major contributing factor to unintentional injuries, the leading cause of death for young people, and it accounts for an estimated 75,000 or more total deaths in the United States annually. There have been a lot of discussions about whether to keep the minimum legal drinking age at 21 or to lower the minimum legal drinking age to 18. The minimum legal drinking age in the United States is set at 21. Limiting the age to 21 as the legal age of maturity is preposterous. When someone is 21, it does not guarantee or mean that they are mature enough to consume alcohol responsibly. Eighteen is considered as an adult, and they…

There are countless facts and statistics on the dangers of drinking and driving and the effect it has had and is continuing to have on society. Drunk driving is blight on our civilization. “An average of 17,000 individuals die each year in drunk driving related deaths” (Injury Prevention). The fact that there are so many alcohol related deaths is beyond me. Someone’s life should not be taken due to the carelessness and irresponsibility of another human being If someone is going to consume more alcohol than the legal limit then they should not be anywhere near any working motorized vehicle. Not only for the safety of those around them, but also for the safety of the intoxicated person themselves. Drunk driving is an enormous public safety issue, which can cause more deaths around the world. “The highest drunk driving rates are from the ages 18 to 25” (Top). Considering the legal drinking age is set at 21, there should be no reason why there is alcohol related accidents caused by those under the age of 21. Alcohol can cause adolescents under the influence to drive more aggressively and thus more dangerous. Alcohol slows down their reaction time and causes them to be less likely to prevent…

    Lowering the Drinking Age

I started my research with “Repeal the Drinking Age,” by Jeffrey Tucker, Publisher and Executive Editor of Laissez Faire Books, from his own Mises Daily blog. In his article, Tucker begins his blog by discussing how most countries’ legal drinking ages are eighteen, but in the “land of the free,” the limit is set at twenty-one, even though the nation knows it is not working. Tucker relates the current drinking age to Prohibition, stating that the twenty-one age limit is rather liberal, and that putting restrictions on alcohol, like during Prohibition, only results in bigger problems. He then concludes that the drinking age is based on “one overarching argument: driving,” where we simply do not want drunken teens on the road. Tucker also states that the data on drunk driving “cannot be statistically attributed to the national minimum drinking-age law.” Tucker concludes by saying if we are serious about a “free society,” the nation needs to repeal the minimum drinking-age law.…

Alcohol in the hands of an irresponsible under aged person, can be deadly. Furthermore, for anyone to consider lowering the legal drinking age from 21, to 18, in my opinion is simply ludicrous. John Bowersox reports, “Since Colonial times, drinking alcohol has been part of American culture and its use by young people has been accepted by many as part of growing up. In fact, during the late 1960s and early 1970s, many States lowered the legal drinking age from 21 to 18. Following this change, the number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities among young people increased. In response to these acute consequences, beginning in the early 1980s individual States increased the drinking age to 21. In 1984, Congress passed legislation that would…
