Increase Harsher Punishment for Cyber Bullying

General purpose: To persuade the audience
Specific purpose: To persuade the audience to increase harsher punishments for those who cyber bully.
Central Idea: Cyber bullying needs to end and those who create others to suffer from cyber bullying need severe punishment.
1. Introduction:
A. According to The Cyber Bullying Research Center, "There are over 1.35 billion monthly active Facebook users worldwide, 200 million monthly active Instagram users worldwide, and 36 million monthly active Twitter users worldwide. Half of all of those users have been or are being bullied online which can lead to anxiety, depression, drug abuse, and suicide." (Cyber Bullying Research 2010)
B. There needs to be an end to cyber bullying because it is a form of teen violence that can do lasting harm to young people. So to prevent cyber bullying, our nation needs to establish strict hard punishment for the people who create suffering to those who are victims of cyber bullying.
C. Cyber bullying needs to be prevented by improved investigation and a right level of prosecution so that a person will think twice before committing cyber bullying and ruining one 's life.
D. I hear way too many stories about people whose lives got extremely effected by cyber bullying and they fall into depression and get extreme low self esteem. Me myself knows how bad it feels to be bullied and to know millions of people are going through what I felt in the past breaks my heart. This is a serious problem that needs to stop now.
E. Today I will discuss why cyber bullying is such a huge problem, the cause of why people cyber bully, and lastly the solution to help decrease cyber bullying.

2. Body:
A. Why is cyber bullying a problem? If young kids, who had their whole futures ahead of them, will point a gun to their heads, jump off a bridge, kill themselves or others, or take a gun in their hands and head to some school yard, then it is a problem!
1. According to Marian Wilde from Great Schools Staff, "New technologies such as cell phones with cameras , social networking sites, and instant messaging are being embraced by teens and pre-teens and these technologies provide new platforms for kids to tease and torment each other."(Great Schools Staff 2013)
2. According to Hinduja," Cyber bullying can occur among children as young as 9 or 10 years old, or as soon as they 're comfortable typing on keyboard."(Hinduja 2005)
3. Cyber bullying can be very damaging to adolescents and teens. It can lead to anxiety, depression, and even suicide. Also, once things are circulated on the internet, they may never disappear, resurfacing at later times to renew the pain of cyber bullying.(Bullying Statistics 2010)
a) For example: 12-year-old, Rebecca Sedwick sprouted at an abandoned cement plant in Lakeland, Fla., where she committed suicide after being cyber bullied.
4. According to The Digital Trends Staff," Recent surveys indicated that 15% of children have received threatening messages online or on their phones. The majority of those who are bullied are girls. These figures are disquieting, not only because of their sheer size, but because the messages strike outside of school, onto the phones and PC 's of other children. Its seeping into the heart and home and it is something that can be done reasonably anonymously, sometimes with devastating results such as attempt of suicide."(Digital Trends Staff 2006)
(TRANSITION) : Now that we have come to realize how big of an issue cyber bullying is, I will discuss what is causing the issue of cyber bullying.
B. Cyber bullying happens for many of the same reasons as any other type of bullying, but it may be even more appealing because it can be done anonymously.
1. According to Stopbullying.gov, "Popular kids or teens may bully because they see it as a way to stay popular and hurting others makes them feel powerful. Kids or teens who are less socially successful may bully because it helps them cope with their own low self-esteem, they think it will help them fit in with their peers, and they have trouble empathizing with those they hurt."(Delete Cyber Bullying 2014)
2. These are some additional reasons people may do their bullying online:1. Anonymity—Cyber bullying allows bullies to avoid facing their victims, so it requires less courage and provides the illusion that bullies won’t get caught. 2.Ignorance of the consequences—The National Council on Crime Prevention reports that in a survey of teenagers, 81% said they believe others cyber bully because they think it’s funny. Because they don’t see their victims’ reactions in person, cyber bullies may not realize how much damage they are doing. 3. Social pressure—Some cyber bullies may think their behavior is normal and socially acceptable, especially when friends egg them on.(Delete Cyber Bullying 2013)
(TRANSITION): Now that we know what is causing cyber bullying, I will now put forth solutions in ways which we can decrease cyber bullying by increasing severe punishment for those who cyber bully.
C. When cyber bullying gets too far to the point where they have made a child or teen or an adolescent hurt their own life, there needs to be stronger consequences to prevent cyber bullying from continuing.
1. The person who creates the first move into cyber bullying should get immediately expelled from school and those who participate in cyber bullying should get suspended for a certain amount of days. Also, it should be written on the students school record that they have committed cyber bullying. This will let the child know that there is a huge consequence from his action in cyber bullying and will prevent him from doing it again.
2. Another punishment should be a year of community service. While they are doing their community service it will always remind them that what they have done was wrong and will prevent them from continuing to cyber bully.
3. If the person who cyber bullied lead someone to kill themselves, that person should be locked up in a prison because they have practically murdered them.

3. Conclusion:
A. Today I have talked to you about increasing harsher punishment for those who cyber bully to prevent it from continuing in the future.
1) First I pointed out the problems of cyber bullying and how it leads to anxiety, depression, and suicide.
2)Second I gave an understanding on the main causes of why people cyber bully.
3)Thirdly, I mentioned a few solutions to increase punishments and consequences for those who cyber bully or participate in cyber bullying.
B. Never ignore the issue on any type of bullying. If we can come together and demand an end to bullying then we can succeed.

Until businesses and schools take cyber bullying as serious as bullying someone in person the issues would not be resolved. Many cyber bullies think that bullying others online is funny. Cyber bullies may not realize the consequences for themselves of cyberbullying. The things teens post online now may reflect badly on them later when they apply for college or a job. Cyber bullying causes different reactions to many different people from depression to legal matters to even suicide. I often think that cyber bullying is worse than physically bullying someone because with cyber bullying nobody know it is happing other than the bully/bullies and one getting bullied but, getting physically bullied someone who could potentially stop it could see it happening. So again if schools and businesses would take all bullying serious that maybe just maybe we would see a decrease in the amount that it…
