Pet Crematory Observation
For my assignment, I chose to do a practical joke on my girlfriend. She is an apprentice at a funeral home in Jeffersonville, IN. The funeral home she works for also has a pet crematory. With the pet crematory, they have a service where they will come pick up your animal either from your house or the vet and cremate it for you. All you have to do is come pick up the ashes. She mostly just works at the actual funeral home, but some weekends she is on call for the pet crematory and has to go pick up pets and communicate with families.
This past weekend happened to be my girlfriend’s week on call for the pet crematory service, so I figured I would have a little bit of fun. I found the number on the internet and decided to give her a call. She

The firm, Topf & Sohn (of Erfurt), were responsible for the machines that would soon help the Nazis burn the bodies of victims of the Holocaust. Ludwig Topf, CEO of the firm, committed suicide after being blamed for being an accessory in the crime claiming that he was under no fault and it was an injustice to be persecuted. During the process of this exercise in Garbology, I chose to collect garbage from my neighbor’s private home. I personally do not know them very well, but we are friendly enough that they were willing and happy to provide their trash and recycling as part of the experiment. I chose to separate the items between trash and recycling, and then created subcategories within those headings. The table below is a list of the categories and the items I chose as anthropological examples of their lifestyle, social class, and preoccupations.…

I remember that Monday just like yesterday. I was sitting behind the drill press fixing a wheel bushing on the neighbors Toro lawn mower. It was a ugly, red, piece of junk, but all the time my grandfathers sang keep echoing in my head "its your name on that job". I then hustled to finish boring the wheel to one half-inch diameter and began inserting the long brass sleeve into the wheel when the phone rang. I answered it was my grandmother, she sounded concerned, she quietly asked, "May I speak with your father." This was a rather new development because it was never my grandmother who called asking for my father it was always my grandfather looking for a hunting buddy or someone to help him work on his old, rusted, pink, 1958 Cadillac. I soon felt chills running down my spine I immediately shut off the huge press as it ground to a halt I heard my dad say Glessing 3 "oh no!" I had no idea what was going on could this be a fatal heart attack, or maybe a…

Did you know that there are over 2.4 million healthy dogs and cats in shelters? Did you also know that one every thirteen seconds are euthanized ("Pet Overpopulation: The Humane Society of the United States")? These animals don’t ask to be brought into this world to be put in a small, cold enclosed cage. I personally wouldn’t want to be born into the world to be given up on, would you? Too many people don’t understand or even care to understand this sad statistic. In fact, humanity is so selfish in that aspect it makes me truly sick. Why do we have to have the cutest puppies or kittens? What’s wrong with an older dog, you don’t have to train them half the time. They need love too. My goal gave me the motivation to reach out to my local shelter that influenced me to explore programs in the future to help all dogs and cats.…

It was about seven in the evening and I got a call from my friend, letting me know she and her grandmother had made it home. Her grandmother is in her 60’s, so there wasn’t much texting going between us. I’d been trying to catch up with her all day to interview her, but I guess she had a very busy weekend. I finally arrived to the house just ready to get the interview over with.…

Busybody thought everything was alright until something horrible happened. It was February 27th, no sign of Johnny Dorset. Mrs. Busybody could finally lie down and relax without being disturbed. Everything was starting to seem so peaceful, relaxing, and calm. She was slowly drifting off to sleep. Then, she heard someone yelling as loud as an elephant. Mrs. Busybody sat up to see the worst surprise ever. The terrible and mean Johnny Dorset has come back. She got ran around the house faster than a cheetah. Awe Man! , “I thought I would never see him again”, she said. “Lord, why me? Is this punishment for popping Johnny’s little, red ball or breaking all his sticks so he wouldn’t be able to play that Indian game”, she thought. Whichever one it was please forgive me. All of sudden, a thought struck her head. “I can leave for a few days”. Mrs. Busybody quickly ran to my dresser and pulled out a week’s worth of clothes. What about my two cats’? , she thought. “I’ll just leave them here”. “My cats are missing limbs and ears and they’re beaten up. If they weren’t in such poor condition, I would gladly them with me”. But, Johnny decided he wanted to throw medium sized rocks at them. Poor cats, they haven’t been the same since then. She finished getting her items together. Mrs. Busybody walked outside to the old, raggedy, blue car in the drive way. She started driving and the car started making funny noises. The dusty, slow car broke down in front of a big cabin. This is better than nothing. “At least I’m away from Johnny”, she said with a stupid grin on her…

What will happen when you die? I don’t mean whether you continue to live in Heaven, Hell, or some other supernatural realm. I mean, do you actually know what will happen to your corpse during the embalming and funeral processes? This subject, as morbid as it may seem, is quite interesting if you look at it. Maybe you will think so after hearing what I have to say. Since the moment I began this speech, 37 people have died, just in Virginia. This means that funeral homes around the state and even in our local city are booming. Embalming, Cremation, and Funeral Services is an occupation that will never lose its demand, but it’s also a profession that gives people the chills when they think about it.…
