INDIVIDUAL BACKGROUND
Alvin Ray Rozelle had a very unique, work filled adolescence that ultimately contributed to his success in the National Football League. On March 1, 1926, Rozelle was born in Los Angeles and spent his childhood residing in the Suburb of Compton. (Wallace, 1996) Growing up, sports were always of interest to him and he was inspired by his father and uncle to involve himself in sports whether that be participating or spectating. Ever since the age of five, no one has known Pete Rozelle for Alvin Ray and that is thanks to his uncle giving him that nickname. (Wallace, 1996)
Rozelle went to Compton Junior College participating in both tennis and basketball there for the school. (Wallace, 1996) A unique thing that not many people know about Rozelle is that he went to school with a Hall of Fame Baseball player named Duke Snider who played for both Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. After graduating high school in 1994, Pete went onto serve for the U.S. navy in World War II. He was stationed in a southern Californian port, San Pedro in which he worked on a coastal tanker, never going far from the port itself. He served for two years, dismissing in 1946. (Wallace, 1996)
After serving, Rozelle was drawn to go get further education and enrolled at the University of San Francisco. At USF, he continued to fulfill his dream by being involved in sports by becoming the sports information director for the school. (Wallace 1996) At the time, football and basketball at the University of San Francisco were both prominent so Rozelle really got to expand his knowledge while performing this job and still going to school.
Despite having a great opportunity at USF to be part of their prosperous sports programs, Rozelle knew that he had to do something more; making $250
