Peter Paul Ruben's Last Supper

The Last Supper by northern European artist, Peter Paul Rubens is created on an oil painting. Ruben’s Last Supper is also one of the only five painting created during the flemish baroque. Ruben’s Last Supper was creating in the flemish baroque style. Rubens was commissioned by Catherine Lescuyer to work on this Last Supper as a commemorative piece for her father (American Pink). The purpose is to commemorate Catherine’s dead father, so Rubens makes this work as part of an altarpiece in the Church of St. Rombout in Mechelen (Rubens). But, Ruben’s first attempt working on this work is fail in 1611, due to his patron, Catherine Lescuyer regrets at the last minute, the reason people guess is because he asks a such high price of 4,000 Guilder back
Ruben’s Last Supper is quite presenting a theatrical performance by showing Judas is setting far to Jesus, Judas is in a guilt motion by holding his right hand to cover his mouth and turing back his back that is actually looking at viewers. The overall painting, the most figure stands out is Judas. The prefect depiction to express Judas’s nervous emotion. Rubens uses color to emphasis each character, such as Jesus is dressed in red in the center area with a yellow halo on his head to show how important Jesus is. Instead, Judas is sitting far away in shadow to emphasis his character stronger. Under the table near Judas, there is a dog biting a bone, the face on the dog shows a greedy look, the dog might be Judas’s companion.
