One of his greatest accomplishments were founding the city of St. Petersburg. Russia also became one of the most powerful Europe countries while Peters ruling. Peter the Great was considered on of the greatest czar of all Russian history. He did attempt to build a bigger army to overpower other European countries, but that costed a great deal of money and a raise in taxes. In 1700, he went to war with Sweden, raging on for 21 years. As Russia took on the victory of the battle, they gained power over the Baltic Sea and transformed the Russian Tsardom into the Russian Empire. Since Peter was born in the medieval world he was captivated by the modern clothes and army; he was really interested in ships and navy. He built a ship just to communicate with the west (Europe) to exchange technology, ideas and other goods, he wanted to westernize Russia; he felt it necessary to do so because he thought that if Russia didn't modernize it would be left behind and would get run over by his European neighbors. When he went to europe he learned nautical science, how to…

The death of Alexander the Great inspired the beginning of the Hellenistic era of the fourth century. The characteristics of this period marked a separation and divide from earlier Greek’s works. Hellenistic artist’s begun expressing their sculptures with such high degree of naturalism contrasting with the earlier religious sculptures that used the idea of realism. Another essential idea that Hellenistic artists used to convey their message on sculptures was the use of emotion, drama, lighting and dynamics poses. The foundation of the Hellenistic era supported many of the works created during the Italian Renaissance. Many of the sculptures created during the Italian Renaissance comprised of religious beings such as Mary or JesuThis paper will…
Firstly, they were both autocrats,in that all decisions of state had to be approved by them.Secondly, they both wanted to curb the power of an ambitious nobility. However, they achieved this aim differently; Louis made his court at Versailles the centre of power,so the nobility had to spend all their time there if they wanted to have any influence. This kept them away from their own provincial power bases, making it hard for them to plot against the king.Peter on the other hand tortured and murdered any nobles he suspected of disloyalty. The main difference between the two was that Louis was ruling a cultural advanced, modern state - Russia under Peter was still very backward compared to major European states,so Peter worked hard to modernize Russia. Finally, both built up strong armies and used them for territorial expansion, thus increasing the prestige of their countries. “I have conquered an empire but I have not been able to conquer myself”(quotezine). Peter the Great built the foundation Russia stands on today, and enabled Russia to become the world power that we know today. Some may credit Peter with inciting westernization in Russia, but westernization started prior to when he was born. After delivering thirteen children to Tsar Alexis I, Maria Miloslavskaya died trying to give birth to her fourteenth child. Out of five sons two survived ( Fedor III and Ivan V), and out of eight daughters only six survived(Massie 34). Within a year after Miloslavskaya death, he found her successor Natalya Naryshkina, a ward of Artemon Matveev. With her semi-Western upbringing, the Tsaritsa was an instrument of change. She brought music into the palace ( something that was once banned), sponsored a royal theater. With her help “Alexi’s painful religious quality gave way to a fun, spirited, eagerness to accept Western ideas entertainments, and techniques”(Massie 44). Peter the Great forcefully pushed Russia to become more western through his class system, policies, and military, but he did so at the expense of his people.…
At one point in time it was believed that there were multiple equestrian statues during the time before the Christianization of Rome. The equestrian statues were created as a representation of their imperial leaders. The Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius created around 173-176 C.E and located in Musei Capitolini, Rome, Italy is the only surviving equestrian statue from that era. The Equestrian Statue of General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, located in Freimann Square in Fort Wayne, Indiana and created around 1918 by George E.Ganiere is similar to the Equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius. Both of the statues creators wanted their works of art to last throughout the years without any damage to them from weather or age.…
Russia was a vast, cold empire with almost no organization, no navy, a limited army, very few decent roads, and few warm water ports. The tsar Peter the Great hoped to strengthen his country by westernizing it. In Moscow, Peter was intrigued with their maritime talk and with the sea-faring instruments they showed him. As a young man…
When you think of Peter I or Peter the Great, as he gave himself that name, one thinks of Russia and the many Tsars that ruled this interesting part of the world. To learn of Peter the Great is to explore his life during 1682 . Peter was responsible for bringing Russia out of darkness and into a more civilized country in hopes that Russia, the Motherland, would gain the respect of the rest of the European theatre and become a great power. To do this required many changes and reforms which Peter the Great was responsible for. Although not completely successful in his reforms, Peter the Great had the attitude that he could never fail. Russia, considered by other countries as primitive, was at no point prepared to expand its territory or even be considered a threat by others with all the internal conflicts happening in the diverse land. Peter the Great was the answer to the lack of respect by the Western world, as he was raised differently than any other tsars or family that came before him. This upbringing will show the attitude and demeanor with which Peter the Great was able to meet the needs of the state. Previous to Peter the Great, the state had never…
Much of Catherine’s fame today came from stopping the Pugachev uprising. A man who claimed he was the deceased Peter III. It wasn’t long before he had thousands following him. They caused many riots, uprisings and violence over the course of several years. Finally, in late 1774 Catherine’s troops captured him, which sent a wave of relief across Russia’s peoples. Before she was able to appoint a rightful heir to her throne she died of a stroke on November 6, 1796. Her legacy continues to live on in Russia’s modern civilization.…

In this Greek vase painting of Theseus showing some of his many labors and great adventures. Starting at the center of the vase the artist showing Theseus most famous minotaur scene I believe that this is the point where Theseus has just killed the minotaur and dragging him out the labyrinth because the sword is still in his right hand and only half his body is showing. As I continue around the vase some of the scenes are easily to identify then others like the scene of Theseus killing Skiron, by the artist adding the turtle on the rock and Skiron shown falling back. Also the scene where Theseus is clearly holding the golden fleece and who I believe to be Jason whom he was helping and the boar in the Calydonian boar. The scene of the killing…
