Petition to Waive the University Mathematics Requirement” Questions
1. How would you vote on this issue? Should this student be exempted from the math requirement? Write out the reasons for your decision.
After reading, annotating, and analyzing the following article, “Petition to Waive the University mathematics Requirement”, I concluded to say No to his request. I don’t think that Mr. Adams should be exempted from taking the math requirements because of several reasons. First, his arguments presents that the college drops a class that is required for everyone that is in the same major as him. This is not reasonable because this challenges the very system of assessing classes to students. If they waive this class for him, any student can present a case in which they would want their class to be exempt. Also there is a flaw with his argument. In the 2nd paragraph Mr. Adam states, “If forced to comply with ASU’s algebra requirement, I will be needlessly preventing from graduating in time to enter law school next fall and face an idle academic year before my next opportunity in 1994.” (Adam, par2). However, Mr. Adam says something that contradicts his former statement in paragraph 11, “In fact, I am more than willing to substitute another course or two in its place. I am not trying to get out of anything hard or distasteful, for that is certainly not my style.” (Adams par.11). He stated that this math course would delay his graduation, but says a few paragraphs later that he would rather substitute this math course for something that is “useful” towards his career.
2. What are the strengths of the argument? What evidence is included?
In the article, Mr. Adam includes several good points that support the claim of waiving his math courses. Mr. Adams continuously states that the academic difficulty was not the issue, but that the relevance of learning college algebra was the reason for his petition. He says, “At ASU I currently maintain a 3.6 GPA, although
