In the play Phantom of the Opera written by Arthur Kopit, it contains many inner and outer realities. That form between many characters. People’s inner realities can distort their image of themselves and alter their perception of the outer world.
The character phantom who has lived in the subterranean levels of the opera house his whole life. He shadowed himself from the face of reality. He can not let in the reality that is the world above him. He cannot comprehend the reality that is the world above him because in the world above humanity judges and shows no compassion. The Phantom never experienced love because his mother left him at a young age, he states “If I am the Phantom it's because man's hatred has made me so. If I am to be saved it's because love redeems me”. The Phantom believes that the only way to be saved is through love. He has a disfigured face and only believes love can save him. The Phantom did not think anybody could love him due to his face. Also when Christine loves him and adores him, he believed that if she saw his face she would never love him. Even when Christine saw his face she thought she was not worthy of it but, still loved him because she can look past his insecurities. Once when he was younger, he had a view of himself and believed he was a monster. So the way he thinks of himself has been changed. Colette said as a rumor “If you are unlucky enough to see his face, you die.” Even others in the opera house knew about the phantom and how he thought no one can see his hideous face. Because in his perception that anyone who see’s his face can not live to tell about it because they would have a perception of him that could not be changed. This affected him because it became a insecurity of his. The Phantom was led to believe that the world above was hell. His impression was destroyed by humanity.
