WHAT IS A
PHARMACOLOGICAL
INTERVENTION?
Pharmacology is defined as:
“a broad discipline describing the use of chemicals to treat and cure disease”
(Kenakin, 2006, p. 1)
Intervention is defined as:
“action taken to improve a medical disorder”
(Miettinen, 2014, p. 95)
or
“the act…of interfering as to modify. Specifically any measure whose purpose is to improve health or alter the course of a disease” (Miettinen, 2014, p. 95)
Laurel has now been in labour for approximately
11 hours. Her contractions are 4/10, strong and last for 60-90 seconds. She is beginning to show signs of fatigue but remains active and mobile during contractions.
She requests a vaginal exam to determine her progress, and although it is not medically indicated, you agree so that it might 'put her mind at ease '. Upon assessment you determine that laurel is 7cm dilated, and 80% effaced. Despite the fact that she is making great progress Laurel is visibly disheartened by the news and asks about the pharmacological pain relief options available to her.
