Phase Seperation PS2 Case Improved Version
Phase Separation Solutions (PS2)
Case Analysis
Group Team Leader : Mrs Ei Phyusin Htay
Situation Analysis
Phase Separation Solutions Inc (PS2), founded in 2004 in Canada, is a young environmental management & consulting company who licensed a patent of unique TPS technology for PCB contaminated soil treatment and oil sludge recovery, having a vision of fully integrated International environmental service company. The firm's competencies, weaknesses, external opportunities and external threats are identified in below summary table.
Strength
High entry barrier due to strict licensing, high start up cost, requirement of special scientific expertise to operate
TPS technology is highly mobile, onsite remedial technology
Exclusive right to use TPS technology in China, patent in Canada & USA till 2019
Highly liquid balance sheet, no long-term loan Weaknesses
Scarce resources and expertise personnel (a limitation to high diversification)

Opportunities
China's environmental agency's expression of interest to go joint-venture
Increasing environmental expenditure by China government ($162.5 billion)
$725 million PCB & POP treatment market in China and more POP waste are expected from growth
Likely regulatory prohibition to export POP contaminated soil from one province to another in China (favors mobile technology such as TPS)

Threat
Shrinking Home market size (Known PCB contaminated soil in Canada are only available for 2 years production of PS2 and its only one competitor, BEV)
Patent expiring in 2019 and competitors will be easy to adopt the competitive TPS technology freely in home market, Canada

Key Issue
Having a shrinking PCB market in Canada is an incentive for strategic diversification where PS2's board is in the dilemma of deciding whether to stay put in home market and diversify product scope (or) going China with NIES for PCB/POP market (or) going China with Nahai for Oil sludge market (or) going China with both are the key issues to be addressed.

The start-up cost is extremely high. Initial costs would include capital equipment, land, marketing, and a facility. Government laws have also evolved into more harsh restrictions regarding emissions and safety regulations. (CITE emission and safety changes). Also, customers base heavy emphasis on brand when purchasing a vehicle. A new firm would have to establish a reputable brand prior to posing a threat to other competitors. Finally, patented technologies may cause a new firm higher production costs due to inefficient operations.…

    Respiration Lab

The objective of this lab was to figure out which has a higher cell respiration rate between crayfish and elodea. In order to figure this out we first set up three beakers to represent our control, elodea and crayfish and filled them with 75mL of culture solution which were dechlorinated making the solution acidic. We then had to place both the elodea and the crayfish in separate beakers filled with 25mL of water. The increase in volume of the water would represent the volume of the two test subjects. We then covered each beaker with plastic, but for the elodea we placed it under a can so it could be in the dark. After waiting 15 minutes to allow them to respire we took it out and add four drops of phenolphthalein, which was also acidic, to both beakers. Once both beakers got their four drops we added drops of NaOH, which was a base, until the solution turned pink. Our results were that the respiration rate of the crayfish was higher than the elodea.…

The commercial production of PCBs began in 1929 (PCBs Polychlorinated biphenyls, n.d.). For over 30 years prior to 1977 the General Electric Company (GE) dumped wastewater into the Hudson RIver, this water contained PCBs (Connolly, Zahakos, Benaman, Ziegler, Rhea, Russell, 2000). Two General Electric facilities were estimated to have released up to 1,300,000 pounds of PCB into the Hudson River in the years between 1940 and 1977 (PCB CONTAMINATION OF THE HUDSON RIVER ECOSYSTEM COMPILATION OF CONTAMINATION DATA THROUGH 2008,…

It all started in 1952 when PG&E built a pumping station that spread over 20 acres in California that was used to pump natural gas through pipes to people across the state. They used a chemical called chromium XI to prevent the rusting of the pipes. The chemical runoff was disposed of in unlined wastewater ponds (Sharp, 2000). In 1987, during a routine check PG&E found that the chromium had leaked into the water supply and in December they reported their findings to the California Regional Water Quality Control Board. The board then ordered PG&E to clean up the pollution. In the early 1990’s, PG&E undertook at $12.5 million clean up effort. This effort included approaching the owners of three farms and ten houses (Sharp, 2000).…

The U.S. system of patents and trademark licensing is highly developed and many licensing arrangements are possible between U.S. and foreign companies. Companies themselves may use licensing to tap into the domestic market expertise of U.S. companies but the disadvantage would be that companies may find the patent application and defence process to be expensive and time consuming and that licenses are subject to U.S. antitrust laws, such as the World Trade Organizations Trade Related aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS) framework.…

Within the case study there are a set of key problems and alternatives presented. The first problem deals with whether PS2 should enter the Chinese market. To investigate this further, economic problems, regulatory problems, and the problem of potential limited markets in Canada and North America may compel PS2 to internationalise. Declining economic markets and volatile industry propensity in Canada and North America display limited sustainable future revenues and weakening PCB-contaminated soil allocation. Regulatory issues prohibit PS2 from transporting soils from the US to Canada in addition to PCBs only providing PS2 with short term momentum as PCB treatment is a declining market in Canada. Currently, in the Canadian market there is a potential limit in regards to the amount of PCB-contaminated soil and unfavourable cost advantages which may require PS2 to look abroad in order to increase their business activities. These factors raise issues of constraints in PS2s existing markets (Canada and North America) which will cause assessment whether PS2 should internationalise into China.…
