Pheromones
Pheromones: Chemical Messanger

Have you ever wonder how does an insect communicate? Unlike other living organisms, insects don’t have the ability to speak and communicate. Some insects may even look like they have eyes but they cannot see through them. So how does these insects communicate with each other? Simple, they send chemical signals that can easily be detected by other insects of their own kind. These chemicals are called pheromones. These are some examples of insects that contain and release these chemical signals, cockroaches and moths.

To start of, the common question that one will surely ask is, what are pheromones? Pheromones are described to be like signals that are secreted by an insect. To be able to receive this chemical signal, one must consist a receptor that is familiar with pheromones. After it binds to a receptor of another insect, translation begins. According to Klein(2012), some insects use compounds that warn of danger(alarm pheromones), while other insects use compounds that promote aggregation among members of the same species(aggregation pheromones)., pheromones are also used by many insects to attract members of the opposite sex for mating purposes(sex pheromones). Others also conclude that pheromones exist in humans and can act as hormones that arouse one’s self. But in insects, pheromones are chemicals produced as messangers that affect the behavior of other individuals of insects or other animals. They are usually wind borne but sometimes are sent in the soil or various items. When pheromones are presented in combinations or concentrations, the message that is being conveyed differs. They travel slowly, do not fade quickly and is very effective even in long ranges and pheromone detection is not limited to straight lines.

An example of a pheromone is the sex pheromone that is used by moths in mating, it is called 2-methylheptadecane. Another pheromone is called undecane, this kind of pheromone is used by cockroaches in aggregation. Both of these pheromones are alkanes, but many pheromones exhibit more functional groups. One of the pheromones called androstenone have a molecular formula or C19H28O.

To sum it all up, chemicals are big components of life. Whether it is secreted or can be found inside the organisms body, it helps one discover intricating events of life. In order for scientists to determine and reveal life and how it began, Chemistry contributes a big chunk of information in discovering life forms and other mysteries of biology.

Every node has a pheromone table for every possible destination in the network, and each table has an entry for every neighbor. For example, a node with four neighbors in a 30-node network has 29 pheromone tables with four entries each. One could say that an n-node network uses n different kinds of pheromones. The entries in the tables are the probabilities which influence the ants’ selection of the next node on the way to their destination node. Figure 4 shows a possible network configuration and a pheromone table. For example, ants travelling from node 1 to node 3 have a 0.49 probability of choosing node 2 as their next node, and 0.51 of choosing node…

Pill bugs, or their scientific name of Armadillidium vulgare are small, very segmented insects beneficial to breaking down naturally decaying wood and leaves which is among them in moist beds of soil (The Dirt Doctor, www.dirtdoctor.com). They do not actually have eyes (only eyespots) so they rely on their antennae and help with the sensing of their surroundings. Since Pill bugs don't have eyes light is not a necessity for survival or everyday living. They have seven pairs of legs, a pair for each body segment, which makes for quicker transportation. Pill bugs also rely on a constant form of moisture because they dehydrate and dry out very easily, but have adapted the ability to absorb water vapor from their surrounding environment (PILLBUGS, www.northern.edu). Therefore, based on their lack of eyes and need for water, pill bugs generally tend to favor a darker, moist environment for an "optimal functioning" rate, however it is not completely "accepted" because pill bugs have been seen out in dry areas during periods of a…

In this experiment, there seem to be a balance of crickets on each side of the chamber. This show that overtime the crickets will adapt to their environment or the cinnamon has no effect on the crickets at all. This makes sense because crickets are not usually exposed to cinnamon; therefore the cinnamon’s odor should not have a major influence on the crickets’ behavior. This experiment did not account for other species of insect, which mean that in some species it may cause a strong interaction between the environment and the organism. A possible extension of this experiment could be to test various insect species to see if it yields similar result. Throughout this experiment, there existed some possible experimental errors. One of the possible errors is…

We conducted the experiment with termites in order to determine how they react to pheromones present in different colors of ballpoint pen ink. The experiment consisted of two parts: in first part we used a ballpoint pen with blue ink, in second – a ballpoint pen with red ink. The reaction of termites was measured by their performance in 1 minute. Every termite in experimental group went through 3 tries in each part of the experiment. The results were recorded and analyzed. The experiment showed that the termites’ reaction was virtually the same for different colors of ink.…

    Termite Lab

This experiment was constructed to determine which type of writing utensil the termites were most attracted to and why. The experiment was performed by placing two separate circles (one red papermate and one lead pencil) on a piece of paper to see what line is favored by the termite. The termite was placed on the lead pencil path first, and then on the red papermate pen path to count how many seconds the termite remained on or followed the pathway. The termite stayed on the red papermate line for a much more significant time than on the lead pencil line. “The presence of insect pheromones that chemically control the behavior of highly specialized social insect species has been well documented…The substance (pheromone), when streaked across the surface of a solid object, creates a trail following response in termite workers allowing them to follow the exact streak” (Tai, Matsumura, and Coppel, 1969). This shows that the papermate pen contains the substance pheromone or something similar. Because of the pheromone the termite was able to follow the papermate pen marking much better than the lead pencil marking.…

The Fringe division tracks down a series of deaths of wives shortly after the passing of their respective husbands. Discovering traces of the husbands' DNA on the bodies of the wife, Walter Bishop (John Noble) suspects that the killer is using pheromones taken from the husband to get close to the wives, using the substances as a perfume. Further identifying castoreum within the pheromone mix, they identify the murderer as Anson Carr (Michael Massee), a former and disgruntled employee of a perfume company inflicted with a rare skin disease. They arrive at Carr's home to find another husband, already dead, in a dehydration chamber, and race to protect his wife, Dianna (Ona Grauer). When no attack comes at the wife, Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) realizes…

Even though they eat bugs, they also are nectar-eaters that drink through their long slim beaks. They are drawn to nectar-producing plants and red blossom ones especially (Mayntz, M., n.d.). Hummingbirds practically have no sense of smell and are attracted to flowers, which have a slight smell, or no smell at all, which leads you to believe the color and how much nectar is produced is what attracts those (Attracting Hummingbirds, n.d.). By planting different colored flowers in a yard, the hummingbirds will be pulled towards the red shaded ones (Venable, N., 1999).…

Since the neighbor sprayed insecticide because the Japanese beetles attacked their rose garden, there are no insects there to carry the pollen. Fruits won’t form unless the flowers are pollinated.
