DESCARTES (1596-1650)
“I THINK; THEREFOR I AM”
THE ONTILOGICAL ARGUMENT: A method of proof which uses intuition and reason alone; examines the concept of God, and states if we can conceive of the greatest possible being, then it must exist.
Speaker Notes: Descartes had strong belief in dualism; meaning that one possess materialistic and non-materialistic form such as body and soul. Dualism allows for the survival of the non-material element (soul), that the soul is immortal and continues after the death of the body. It takes belief to think that there is an afterlife. He said everything you think you know is actually made of belief and something must exist for you to even ask if it exists.

TO BELIEVE OR NOT TO BELIEVE?
Speaker Notes: A weak point in this argument is the lack of actual concrete facts. Most of the argument is a sort of “What if?” theory. A different outcome can be theorized when bold statements are made. Beliefs are instilled through interaction in society. You must have heard of an idea before it came to mind in order to think of it. Therefore, it is someone else’s idea and not your own.

My thoughts…
Everyone has their own right to believe in what they want to believe. Speaker Notes: From a child, a person is taught different things and told what to believe. Throughout life a person will come across many different beliefs.
