Many of us will contribute this steep number of those in bondage due in part to third world countries, emerging nations, and refugees. Yet, slavery exists in the more established countries such as France, Spain, Greece, China, and Italy. Among that lengthy list of countries lies the United States, and yet most of us are clueless to its existence. Soodalter presents that fact that slavery has existed since the discovery of the “New World” by Christopher Columbus, and has continued beyond the Civil War into the Civil Rights Era and right into the present day. With the global population increasing every year and the collapse of national borders around the world, people in desperation to survive have become obvious targets for human traffickers.…

In Rooted in Slavery: Prison Labor Exploitation, Jaron Browne points out that in deliberate decisions made by the United States and the G7, efforts were made to move entire production facilities to the south creating a shortage of jobs in the United States in the 1970’s. With this move came staggering numbers of unemployment especially among African Americans. When Kevin Bales says “slavery is like someone is mugging you and stealing your life.” it is so true. Child slaves usually don’t get to do what other children do, like get an education, spend time with friends, or get respected. They have to miss out on all of those aspects of life. According to “A Child Slave in California” Shyima Hall worked about 18 hours a day. And she got no respect for what she did. The Ibrahims called her shagala which means servant and “stupid.” The Ibrahims took her away from her friends, family, home, respect, etc. Without that they can control you, they took away Shyima Hall’s life, and made her work. And the only thing she got out of it, was disrespect. She didn’t go to school, she could never go to doctors when…

A slave is a human being considered as property and forced to work for nothing (abolition.ezbn.org). A slave is treated as property to be bought and sold. There are two types of slavery, chattel and debt bondage. Chattel slaves are people who are owned forever and whose children and children's children are automatically enslaved. Chattel slaves are individuals treated as complete property, to be bought and sold. Debt bondage is another form of slavery that is still practiced around the world. This happens when a person gets a loan and gives up their freedom as a form of collateral. Sometimes parents even sell their children into this kind of bondage. In theory, debt bondage ends when the loan is paid off, but in practice, the deal is almost never so simple, and people often end up with impossible debts to…
