Philip Gulley represents small-town based American lifestyle. He is a well-known writer and has written more than 21 books, comprising the Harmony series and his best-selling essay series ‘Porch Talk’. His other famous books include Hometown Tales, Front Porch Tales and For Everything a Season. He also hosts a TV show, "Porch Talk with Phil Gulley". ‘I Love You, Miss Huddleston: And Other Inappropriate Longings of My Indiana Childhood’ is based on Gulley’s diary and was American Humor’s finalist for the Thurber Prize. He moved to work at the age of 19, where he met Joan Apple and married with her in 1984 in Paoli, Indiana. Gulley attended Marian College, Indianapolis and studied sociology and theology. Later, he enrolled at Christian Theological Seminary and earned graduation with honors.
During his studies at seminary, he became Irvington Friends Meeting’s pastor in Indianapolis. Gulley’s two sons were born there. He was a born writer and started writing essays and other write-ups for church's newsletter being a pastor. His first book, Porch Tales, was consisted of the material published in newsletters. He was moved back to his hometown in 1998. Where he left writing for a year and became Fairfield Friends Meeting’s part-time pastor.
Gulley spent a pleasant childhood; he wrote ‘The Harmony’ reflecting his small town where he grew up years ago.
