Based on the research, Turkey is one of the ten largest cigarettes producing countries in the world, accounting for 1.7% of global production in 2006. But it has been change a lot in last 10 years. Cigarette consumption per capita in Turkey is 1399 by year 2014. Nowadays Turkish State is trying to reduce the number of smokers. In addition, they also make it harder tobacco companies to market their projects to young people. So, the price of the cigarettes in the country is become more expansive and the current price per packs is between $7 and $10.
In Turkey, the smoking prevalence significantly decreased from 32.2 percent, 16 million, in 2008 to 27.1 percent, 14.8 million, in 2012 .In year 2008, Turkey smoker declined 13.4 percent, Of which 13.5% were male; 13.7% female. And also adult male smoking rate dropped from 47.9 percent to 41.5% in Turkey.
One of the reasons why the number of Turkey smoker decreased is because Turkey government has started legal which means t fight against smoking in 2006. Smoking ban in Turkey took full effect in 2009 and also ban smoking in all enclosed public areas including restaurant, café, bar, public transport like taxi and train and outdoor stadium. The ban included premises that serve nargile, or hookah, but excluded private residences. Tobacco tax in Turkey represented 65% to 70% percent of the retail price for many years. With the adoption of the revised law in 2008, the tax gradually increasing and now represent 80.3 percent of the retail price. Turkey government raise the tax for cigarette are useful for tobacco control and also change the consumption pattern for cigarette in Turkey. So that, many smokers in Turkey are started to quit smoking due to the cost of cigarettes is getting to be more expensive lead to the sales of cigarettes in Turkey begin to slowly decrease in recent years.
