He was an Italian composer, he was the first composers of his group. His style is known for from his fully texted voice parts. His ideal sound for his music consisted of a sweet, gentle melody. None of Bologna's biographical documents survived. Bologna was a great influence on the prime figures of 14th century Italian music. After his death in 1386 his music still playing in northern Italy and Tuscany, His work was still treasured even after his death.

During the 1220's –30's Philippe released Summa de bono, which was an unprecedented achievement for his time. Summa de bono probably contains one of the first treatment of a theme that rose to noticeable quality later in the medieval period. Philippe was one of the first to compose a Summa around a focal foundational guideline, the notion of the good. Philippe's work was so influential that it has given attention to musicologist in the past few years.
