Ones health is not constant throughout the aging process and it will never be. If it were constant, then we would not have behavioral change theories to work with. Health is dynamic and always changing either for the better or worse depending on the type of behavioral change. Health is generally defined as the state of disease abstinence, yet it is far more complicated. When individuals are physically fit usually they are viewed as healthy people, but they could be emotionally troubled so technically they are not completely healthy people. Being healthy means maintaining a healthy balance between all different health aspects they physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, social, and environmental. There lies the true change of how to achieve …show more content…
the healthy balance between all the health aspects.
Most Often, it is hard to sustain a healthy environment because it can get very political and complicated. Environment is usually a matter that is not controlled by individuals, but the choice of what to do about it is heavily depended on the individual. If any individual demanded a change in the environment and worked towards it, it can be achieved. For example, asking policy makers in universities to implement a smoke free campuses and select designated smoking areas then enforce the policy accordingly.
Controlling the risk factors that contribute to ones health can minimize the chances of ever getting a diseases in the first place. Some diseases are out of ones control and they are inherited biologically such as, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and glaucoma. Most environmental factors are not controlled by humans as an example, people living in Scandinavian countries have low levels of sun exposure then develop a vitamin D deficiency.
Whenever anyone is trying to achieve a behavioral change there will always be limitations, but it depends on the individual willingness to push the limits or let them interrupt the change.
The personal and social responsibility are two faces of the same coin. They work together to form one outcome better individuals for a better society. Yet we do not see many health education or promotion programs designed to target a community rather than an individual. In most health education programs, they are often focused on alternating the personal behavioral for a better quality of life and longevity.
The article states that people who come up with their own personal diet program tend to maintain it better and have higher chances of success than others. In my own philosophy of health I mentioned that not all environmental factors can be controlled and the article supports that point. In the article, it says that when it comes to the environment no change can be made due to political involvement and complications surrounding this topic. I believe otherwise the environmental change can be achieved through speaking up against the big sharks in charge, peaceful protests, and gathering signatures to make a
change.
