Describe a situation of public interest in which critical and/or creative thought could have been used for a better outcome. Describe why it is important to think critically and creatively in similar situations.
A situation that definitely could’ve used better critical thinking is the ridiculous crime spree in Ferguson after the Brown case. One hindrance is the “Mine-Is-Better-Habit” (Ruggiero, 2012, "Chapter 3, Habits That Hinder Thinking"). Entering a situation believing that your methods and ideas are the only correct ones leaves you bound from expansion. Face saving is another hindrance that is very similar to the previous in that it is driven from pride and a desire for authority. A third obstacle is resistance to change, which can be derived from comfort or fear. One method to fight the urge of monopolizing improvements or hiding from change is to create a “parking lot” with multiple solutions from multiple sources. Identify the timeline to implement each idea, as well as any possible side effects and downfalls. This will not only give you options to choose from, but it will allow you to view the vulnerabilities that you can expect. I have experienced many situations in my history as a project manager where I felt my knowledge and experience trumped any other suggestion. AT&T Wireless is currently running a commercial featuring Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks and Co-Host of reality show “Shark Tank”. I am a fan of the show, which features multi-millionaire business personalities that offer entrepreneurs the opportunity to sell a portion of their business in return for an investment. It is essentially a negotiating battle with a potentially successful product. Mark Cuban plays the same role in AT&T’s clever commercial where he is negotiating the amount of data he receives on his monthly cellular plan. In seeing this advertisement and my knowledge of the reality show, I am lead to believe that one can negotiate for data and talking minutes of your monthly service. This is obviously not true, because AT&T would lose money if the sales person was a weak negotiator. My perception of the commercial is the negotiation power of Mark Cuban, but the reality is that AT&T is offering an amazing deal with their new Data Rollover
