There used to be much hunting of Phoca vitulina because it was thought that they competed with fisheries. Today, mass hunting of Phoca vitulina is mostly prohibited in the U.S. However, hunting is allowed for Alaska’s indigenous peoples because that is what they eat. Also, the population of Phoca vitulina in the Baltic Sea has greatly decreased because of an extermination program. In Norway, there is a yearly quota set on the catching of Phoca vitulina. There have also been many viral outbreaks that have affected Atlantic populations of Phoca vitulina, as well as an outbreak of phocine distemper in Europe. Also, since many populations of P. Vitulina come ashore in heavily populated areas, they are exposed to a threat posed by wild land animals and pets such as dogs.
