3. Select one of the common ores in your state or region (such as northwest United States, southeast United States, or western Europe). Where does it come from? Why does it occur there? How important is it economically? Why?…
I strongly disagree with the building of Polymet mining in Hoyt Lakes for the very large amount of pollution that is caused, the tremendously high cost of fixing a polluted mine, and a very, very bad track record. The Polymet mine will cause so much pollution such as the sulfuric acid drainage: sulfide + H20 + O2. If this is to be leaked into the rivers it can cause toxicity to marine life. The Polymet Mine my also cause pit walls, waste rocks piles, tailings basin, and even heavy metal contaminants which will cause a lot of damage to marine life and life on land. The second point is that Polymet has a very bad track record. The financial and environmental statistics are dismal. Pollution is not always predictable. One hundred…
With the development of the Yuma Project, developers and residents experienced a lot of changes and obstacles. With the partnership of the Bureau of Reclamation, the Yuma Project became a successful farmland and agribusiness hotspot. Infrastructure in Yuma was developed to attract more population and marketers.…
1. Since Coalwood is a small town it does not have a lot of industries so most families that live in the community work in the mine. Mining is one of the only industries in the community so for most people their only shot at a job is working at the mine. Most people in the community know that they will end up working in the mine because of the lack of industries. People in the community also know that if the mine is not being worked in the community will suffer and lose a lot of money.…
Would you stay at Valley Forge? I would stay at Valley Forge because only 15% of people died, there is help coming, and because of the inspirational words of Thomas Paine.…
I visited the site of the proposed Pebble Mine last week. Like many Alaskans, I had misgivings about the wisdom of a large-scale mine being developed in the middle of one of the World’s great fisheries. So it was with a fair amount of skepticism that I approached this tour. The presentation that opened the tour contained a history of the exploration, area geology and an explanation of how deposits of this nature is usually mined.…
The Colorado Coal strike was one of the most influential and large scale from September 1913 to December 1914 in the southern Colorado in the early 20th century of America. On the April 1914, the battle battle was broke out that between the striking coal miners and the Colorado National Guard at the Ludlow Tent Colony, the battle which caused the multiple deaths which including innocent victims 2 women and 11 children. They died in the cellar under the tent when the tents were set fire by the guard. This massacre has evolved into the Ten Days’ War, as the striking miners retaliated with the merciless massacre of the militia until the President Woodrow Wilson sent federal troops stationed in southern Colorado to intervene and mediate the battle.…
In 1849, quartz mining began at the Mariposa mine in Mariposa County. Gold deposits were often found inside quartz veins. In 1850, California became a state. Also that year, gold-bearing quartz was found at Gold Hill in Grass Valley. This led to the development of the great underground mines in that district and a major industry the continued for more than 100 years.…
Historically, mining has been a crucial part of the UP economy. Without mining, today's economy would look very different in the areas of education, healthcare, etc. The land and climate are not very suitable for agriculture because of the long harsh winters. So when the UP had its first settlers, they most likely relied on logging, mining, and tourism (because of the beautiful beaches and terrain) for survival and eventually, to build capital and use the Upper Peninsula’s many break-in-transport’s as a spot for trading. Early settlers likely had to rely heavily on trade to get food/agriculture that they could not grow like wheat. So without mining, early settlers might not have had enough natural resources to provide sustainable living. Mining has shaped and affected the UP economy both directly and indirectly. Mining brings employment, government revenues, and opportunities for economic growth. Mining produces minerals that people put a high value on, and like #9 on the ‘Twelve Key Elements of Economics’, producing goods and services that people value, not just jobs, provides the source of high living standards here in the UP. Living standards cannot increase without an increase in the availability of goods and services that people value. The UP might see an increase in the amount of mining in the immediate future because of a severance tax policy just signed a month ago by Governor Snyder that is going to help new mining operations as the bill says that they will no longer pay taxes until they start extracting minerals. Also, the new law places a tax of 2.75% on minerals like copper and nickel that will be collected by local units of government with 65% of the revenue for counties, townships, and school districts. 35% will go to rural development to support long-term economic development. So to this day, there is evidence that mining always has been and still is improving our…
Like any formal writing, the beginning is equally important as the end. In order to appreciate the present, the past needs to be understood. Knowing the journey of where I grew up from the beginning to present day is amazing. It’s hard to believe there was a time in my hometown, Iron Mountain, Michigan, where electricity didn’t exist nor did the everyday tools we now take for granted. I often wonder what the city looked like to my grandparents and their family before them.…
Naturita, Colorado is a small town of just over six hundred residents located near the Western border of the state in Montrose County. The town is situated at nearly a mile above sea level, in the valley of the San Miguel River. The area is noted for having a desert climate like nearby Southern Utah, and being surrounded by areas of greater elevation that are naturally forested. Naturita means little nature and was named by Mrs. Rockwell Blake, one of the town’s early residents, for the nature that flourished alongside the river banks in contrast to the surrounding barrenness of the desert.…
The damming of Hetch Hetchy valley was one of the first big controversial environmental debates that started the conservation movement, in the United States. The Hetch Hetchy Valley is a glacially formed valley in the northwestern corner of Yosemite National park in California. Yosemite was declared a national park in the late 1800’s by congress to protect this valuable wilderness for all people. The debate was between John Muir and Gifford Pinchot. Muir was against the dam and Pinchot was for it. Muir founded the Sierra Club and was one of the leading advocates for the creation of the U.S. national park system. Pinchot was one of the first scientific foresters (head of the US Forest service), and he worked to develop programs that created public interest in conservation. Both were considered to be founding fathers of the environmental movement in the US. In 1906 San Francisco experienced a devastating earthquake that highlighted their…
This report will explain the impact of mining in Kakadu National park and what effect it has on such topics as marine life, flora and fauna, tourism, climate and the history of Kakadu National Park.…
While taking my Zinc supplement, I have always wondered that when was Zinc discovered and where did it come from. After a couple of researches, I find out that Zinc was discovered in Germany in 1746 by Andreas Marggraf. Zinc is found in earth’s crust. The average natural level of zinc in the earth’s crust is 70 mg/kg (dry weight), ranging between 10 and 300 mg/kg.1 Zinc can also be founded in Zinc ores deposits. Zinc ores was discovered as early as 1400 to 1000 B.C. in Palestine. Zinc ores contain 5-15% of Zinc. 2 By froth flotation, Zinc gets separated from the Zinc ores. Froth flotation of Zinc ores are performed inside a vat with an impeller. Inside the vat, the zinc ores are grinded to a fine powder. The next process is mixing the zinc ores powder with water, pine oil and flotation chemicals. By mixing the mixture, it helps the zinc to float on the surface.…
The goal of coal mining is to obtain coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery. In Australia, "colliery" generally refers to an underground coal mine. Coal mining has had many developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunneling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyor, jacks and shearers (definitions.net). A career in coal mining requires specific skills and training, offers common compensation and benefits, and has an expected career path and opportunity for advancement.…
