1. A pinhole camera is a camera in its simplest form. It’s simply a light tight box with a small pinhole on one side of it. We know these devices have been around before the nineteenth century because the first pinhole camera was invented thousands of years ago.
2. A French inventor from the 1820’s named Joseph Nicephor Niepce created the first photograph using a pewter plate and a substance known as bitumen of Judea. Bituman hardens when it is exposed to light that way the unhardened parts could be washed away, leaving the negative image of the object. Once the negative image was created, you could then apply ink to the image and use a sort of stamp to produce a print of the image. This process was a prototype for modern day photographs.
3. A Calotype is a process created by Henry Fox Talbot in 1841, which used paper coated with silver iodine. In this process the paper was sensitized with a silver salt solution and exposed to the light. As a result a negative image of the object or person was created in this was then used to create contact prints in which the light and shadows are reversed to show the image.
4. The Kodak Brownie was the first camera available to the masses in 1900-1901 and was intended to be able to be used by all individuals rather than just professionals with technological knowledge.
5. Richard Maddox developed a way for photographers to use gelatin instead of glass for the negatives which also allowed photographers to develop a dry plate technique rather than the wet plates of the collodion process.
6. The technology that led to the development of digital cameras originated with the development of television technology and the ability to capture live images from television. Other technologies that contributer to the digital camera came from spy satellites used during the cold war.
