In Galen Guengerich’s article, “‘Selfie’ culture promotes a degraded worldview,” the minister discusses why he believes selfies are detrimental to today’s society. A selfie is a picture taken, usually using a smartphone, of oneself and then sent to others or posted online. One of Guengerich’s main points is that selfies suggest that an individual is self-centered, even if this may not be true. By constantly posting pictures of yourself, the individual seems to be saying they like to put attention on themselves. This may encourage some people to shy away from a person who has a heavy social media presence. Another point that the author stresses is those who take and post selfies excessively tend to be less socially connected. While it would…

Photoshop is vastly used throughout our culture, known for its scandalous use on models to advertise clothing. Unfortunately, I think photoshopping a model can change a potential customer's perspective on whether to buy the product advertised. I would think that the buyer's reasoning would include something like "Well because the model looks good in that dress, I think I would look amazing too!". That is, if the person were confident with their appearance but not fearful that the outer beauty of the model is too beautiful, even though the beauty might comprise of mainly photoshop. Otherwise, a potential buyer's perspective would be the complete opposite - "the model looks so pretty, I'm not as pretty though so I'm sure that I won't rock that dress".…

According to “Miss Representation” video, America teenagers spend 31 hours watching TV, 3 hours watching movies, 10 hours using online website, and 4 hours reading magazines for a week which show time of media consumption. The social media often build woman actors who are sexy, thin, pretty and young. And then, the women follow this standard; they force themselves like these characters. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how this use of photoshopping is negatively affecting young women. Whereas some are convinced that girls put the pressure on themselves, others maintain that the media is to be held responsible for exerting pressure to have the “perfect body.” It is sometimes said that Kim Kardashian, a well-known celebrity, is a role model for these young women and girls. Recently, Kim Kardashian posted a naked selfie, edited using Instagram, claiming that this act was self-empowering. Kardashian herself writes for her online blog, "I am empowered by my body . . . I hope that through this platform I have been given, I can encourage the same empowerment for girls and women all over the world” (qtd. in Filipovic). Basically, what Kardashian was trying to say here is that girls and women should love their body no matter what they look like. Kardashian and other celebrities like her are speaking out for body image and are trying to help girls realize they don't have to have a flawless body; however, these flawless bodies, like Kardashian’s, are the types of bodies that are seen in advertisements for the fashion…

There is something completely wrong with that, and leads my thoughts to “How did it get to this?”.…

Dvorak, he explains “This selfie phenomenon is generally in the age bracket of about 13-20 with a few immature older people constantly shooting selfies.” His main purpose is how taking selfies is a sign of narcissism, self-absorbance, and how adults in today’s time need to change the way this generation thinks.…

Looks don't matter; its inner beauty that really counts. We grew up hearing these phrases. Our parents and teachers taught us not to judge people based on their looks. If all these things are true, then why do most of us judge people solely on their outer appearance? Why does the media put so much pressure on us to look a certain way, or fit into a specific size? Why do we still see headlines like “How to Lose Weight and Get Him to Like You”? Why does the media use severe airbrushing techniques to hide any flaws and impurities a person has? Magazines and media sites should not be allowed to drastically alter and manipulate people’s images and portray those images as the perfect goal one should strive to achieve. Being bombarded with unrealistic body images could have devastating effects on people, especially on women. Women need to start feeling happy and comfortable in their…

Young men and women across the nation will compare their body type to those seen on social media, television and advertisements. An unrealistic weight standard is set for children and young adults, which can cause fat shaming, eating disorders, and extreme dieting. Adolescent girls mostly want to lose weight and become thinner, while adolescent boys want to become stronger and bigger, with girls experiencing more dissatisfaction with their body than boys. The youth compares being overweight to being unappealing or careless; in a focus study, boys and men linked being fat as a weakness or a lack of self control, and blamed those who are overweight (Adams). Studies show that young women are more likely to have self esteem issues due to weight and will take more extreme measures to lose weight. Many young women believe that they are overweight and plan on losing weight or dieting, a study shows that 44% of young women believe they are overweight, while 60% are actively trying to lose weight (Morris). Adolescent girls mostly want to lose weight and become thinner, while adolescent boys want to become stronger and bigger, with girls experiencing more dissatisfaction with their body than…
