then passed down the electron transport chain and produces NADPH and ATP. The lost electron from the chlorophyll molecule is regained by a water molecule, resulting in the production of oxygen as a byproduct. The oxygen is released into the atmosphere, which is utilized my living organisms. NADPH and ATP, the products of the light dependent reactions, are then utilized in light dependent reactions. When they interact with carbon dioxide from the atmosphere they generate glucose molecules. For more information, refer to Gas Analyzer Instructions, General Data Collection, and Analysis from the Bio 152 Principles: Molecules/Cells Lab Manual. Photosynthesis is one of the most important chemical reactions on earth, because it provides the majority of fixed carbon molecules on earth.
This results in the production of carbon and energy, which living organisms need to utilize in order to survive. The amount of light present is an important factor in photosynthesis, because light is needed in the first set of reactions during photosynthesis in order to create glucose. Photosynthesis can occur with little light, but it must utilize ATP and NADPH for the light independent pathway to continue there is little ATP and NADPH being made by the light dependent reactions. Without light, photosynthesis would not be able to occur, which would be detrimental to living organism and plants on earth, because there would be an insignificant amount of oxygen in the atmosphere. I hypothesized that as the number of layers of wash-in-walk fabric increased in between the spinach and light source, which is giving the spinach less access to light, would result in a smaller depletion of carbon dioxide compared to the runs with less wash-in-walk fabric in between the light source and the
spinach.
