People working in construction are being told to minimise environmental impacts when carrying out there work. Many negative impacts can be reduced during the planning stage of a build. Any new build will have a negative impact on home owners and businesses. There will be increased traffic on roads and the towns will be fuller. Once the construction has been completed there may be longer term impacts. For example if you have a building site that builds 600 new homes and the road around the area are small compact roads there there will be a lot of congestion. Modern housing developments and commercial properties need to have amenities near them in order to make them viable in the longer term. This means the building of schools, hospitals, health centres and shops.

Sustainability is where you use renewable resources to power you house. Fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas are not renewable fuels. Once you use then you cannot get them back. If you have a wind turbine or solar panels then you are using renewable sources and keeping a sustainable house.

Sustainability in construction is all about using materials in the most efficient way. It could mean cutting down on waste on site and reducing the amount of materials that have to be disposed of and put into landfill, or cutting back on carbon emissions.
