The clip chosen is episode 1 from season 1, the “Pilot” from the hit television show Gossip Girl, I will be using the entire clip for my argument. In the show Serena is always viewed as the pretty blonde popular girl, and Dan is seen as an average Joe outsider. The clip examines how less attractive people are often insecure and have lower self-esteem, but contrary to popular belief, attractive people often value other characteristics more than physical attractiveness. Serena is naturally seen as a really attractive girl that every guy wants. She is often criticized for dating Dan because he is seen as then less attractive outsider. Because of Serena’s looks she is always the go to girl whenever it comes to social events or advice on dating, as the book states physically attractive people are generally perceived as having socially desired characteristics, such as popularity (Knapp & Hall, 2010, p. 179). However, even though Serena is seen as popular she is often criticized for using her looks to get ahead in life because she lacks in other areas. Though self-esteem issues are often associated with women, men often times do have confidence problems based attractiveness (Knapp & Hall, 2010, p. 178).The clip shows Dan trying to return Serena’s phone, because of his unattractive mindset he does not believe that she knows who he is, even though Serena is the love of his life and they attend the same school. When Dan is trying to return Serena’s phone and the doorman calls Serena over, the viewer can suddenly see Dan becoming socially awkward. According to lecture 6, those who feel unattractive often hide, are shy, and socially uncomfortable, Dan’s frantic hand movements and wide eyes
