When things are under extreme stress or pressure they change into something else and react in different ways. People can change just like metals do in crucibles. They can change personalities do things that no one expected them to do. Reverend Parris, Reverend Hale, and John Proctor in The Crucible, changed under pressure and did things that were unexpected when they were were under great pressure.
Reverend Parris’s judgement is usually clear but recently it is unclear when he finds out there is witchcraft happening around him and a prime component is someone that is close to him. “I have given you a home, child. I have put clothes upon your back—now give me an upright answer. He didn’t want to lie and die knowing he could’ve told the truth like the other people that died. Elizabeth says to John, “And yet you’ve not confessed till now. That speak goodness in you.” Elizabeth can see the goodness in John even though he has committed some very bad sins.
