Physical Pain In Slavery
Physical pain may be an unbearable feeling, but being forced to leave family is way worse. Slaves were treated like livestock, they were poked and prodded, they were picked from groups and separated from friends and family. Their superiors gave no thought to their feelings, they truly did not care. They would do as they pleased, and not let any slave emotions get in their way. I can not fantasize the feeling slaves had when they were separated from their family. The physical pain is one thing, but constantly thinking if your mother is dead or alive, if she is in pain or happy, that is truly awful. The slaves were also treated as if they were experimental guinea pigs, they were tested on, and used to find ways of medically helping people of

In the documentary “Slavery & Making of America” (SMA) they paint a completely different picture about life as a slave. Slaves were captured, torn from their families, abused, raped, overworked and even whipped. Not to mention bought and sold as if they belonged to anyone other than themselves to begin with. Most slaves, afraid of what might happen to them and/or their family members, lived with the abuse, as they had no other choice.…

What is slavery? According to Dictionary.com it is the process in which “a person who is the property of and wholly subject to another; a bondservant”. Slavery is very unheard of in this millennium era for as it first occurred in 1619 when the first African Americans were brought over to North American colony of Jamestown and ended in 1865 when the thirteenth amendment was ratified and abolished slavery. For many of the persons in this new generation not a lot of reflection is focused on slavery and its cruelty. It is up to the few who are given the opportunity to share the truth of the violence and exploitation of slavery and the harm it caused not only to the newly founded country but specifically the South. In her article, Lulu Wilson, describes the many hardships that a slave had to live with on a daily basis. “’Course I was born in slavery, ageable as I am” (Haynes, 201). No slave had a choice if they wanted to become a slave or not, and unfortunately, a majority of all slaves were born into it. They were born and raised as slaves, and they had no say in the matter. One of the greatest hardship a slave, had to face was getting ripped apart from their families. Families were separated, sold to different slave owners. A lot of the times, the slaves never saw their families again. “They must please the white folks that wanted niggers to breed like livestock ‘cause she birthed nineteen children” (Haynes, 211). A majority of slaves, were forced to…

A shoemaker in Massachusetts once said, “We are worse treated than the slaves of the south”. The free-laborers were not forced to America in ships, stripped of their culture, their language, and their freedom. The free-laborers were not enslaved. I do not agree with the shoemaker’s statement, but rather believe the Southern slaves were treated worse than Northern laborers. It may have been true that laborers in the North had harsh working conditions, but they did however, have their freedom. The laborers were not treated as if they were property. Slaves were treated more as pets than people, often times abused and ordered to perform hard labor. The slaves had no form freedom whatsoever. Every aspect of their lives was controlled by their owner, what times they eat, sleep, or work. Their lives consisted of routine, doing the same thing every day, especially slaves working at cotton factories. It is unreasonable that a man with freedom can argue that he is worse treated than a man without freedom. Slaves were forced into slavery and often had brutal punishments if they made mistakes. If slaves were treated so much better why, is it that free laborers did not flee to the south so that they could become slaves. Slaves were treated a lot worse, considering that they were treated as property, took care of poorly, and had no freedom.…

They called this slavery. He explained to me that slavery was when us dark-skin folks were being owned by white farmers in America. The farmers made people like us work for long, hard hours in cotton and tobacco fields. He said if they did not do what the farmers told them to do, the could get whipped. I have been hit by a switch before, and I myself did not like the feeling of is on my backside. I could only imagine what pain my people would go through if they got whipped. And my dad told me that the whippings they received were much worse than the measly little ones that I have received. The were whipped with bull whips and cat o' nine tails across the back till they bleed. And they weren't made to bend over a chair like I was. Instead the were usually tied to a tree or a fence post. They usually lived in little sheds the farmers had with about twelve people, getting served little food. They were only aloud one fifteen minute break during a day. Otherwise they could not rest until they hit the hay (quite literally). I am greatful that a live how I do…
