Occupational therapy helps improve the patient’s ability to perform daily activities and work skills of people with a mental, physical, or cognitive disorder. Occupational therapists help people participate in the things they want and need to do through the use of everyday activities thus earning them more independence. Some of the exercises they do would include: washing of hands, cutting with scissors, using dining utensils, drawing and so forth.
Another type of physical therapy is Orthopedic Therapy. Orthopedic Therapy manages and treats disorders and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Through my internship I have been exposed to many different types of injuries requiring different forms of physical therapy. One form that has stuck out as a real interest for me has been the study of lymphedema. This is the uncontrollable swelling of an affected area due to either the lymph nodes being injured, infected or removed. Through physical therapy, the Lymphedema Specialist massages open the lymphatic system and pushed the unfiltered fluids back through the lymphatic system for the body to re filter, then the patient’s affected area is wrapped tightly with a compressional garment. This area interests me because it a relatively new field of study and would be interesting to be involved with something so new and evolving. An added bonus is the therapist and the patient see each other nearly daily, thus a relationship is
