Physician assistants are licensed practitioners that provide patient-centered care in various medical fields, under the supervision of a physician. PAs can treat patients, perform physical exams, prescribe medications, and provide medical education to patients. I strongly believe that as a graduate of Clarkson University Physician Assistant Studies program I will embody this definition.
The PA program at Clarkson University consists of an intense, but comprehensive, didactic and clinical curriculum that yields adept and compassionate physician assistants. This program focuses on learner-centered education which is key in developing autonomous providers. As a graduate student at Rutgers University Graduate School of Biomedical Science, I discovered my preferred learning style is self-learning. This program …show more content…
has allowed me to mold my study habits required for the demanding course load while enhancing my time management skills as I continued to work part-time. Success in challenging courses, such as Molecular Virology and Gene Expression, has proved to me that I have the focus and determination needed to thrive as a PA student at Clarkson University.
Furthermore, growing up in New Jersey and attending one of the most diverse state colleges has allowed to me interact and form relations with people from many different backgrounds. For instance, as a medical scribe working in an inner-city emergency room, I had the rare opportunity of treating diverse patient populations, such as those without health insurance or primary care providers. This, in turn, taught me to appreciate an individual’s dignity while providing care, which complements one of Clarkson University’s values. As a PA student here, I will be able to further develop my interpersonal skills, such as leadership, flexibility, thoughtfulness, and empathy. [inset closing sentence].
Lastly, Clarkson University, as well it’s Physician Assistant Studies program, emphasizes the importance and benefits of community service by integrating service learning into the PA curriculum.
This distinction will positively influence my education as it will help cultivate an open and friendly environment, one in which I can prosper in as PA student. Moreover, as an active member of my community, I can confidently say that community service has played a big role in personal character development. For example, last spring I taught a short course in elementary engineering to middle-school children through an organization called JerseyStem. As an educator, I was able to teach, encourage, and inspire children, which furthered my desire to help others. As a Clarkson University PA student, I know I will develop into a physician assistant who is driven to make positive changes in our
community.
Clarkson University’s Physician Assistant Studies program provides a unique learning opportunity, both academically and professionally. If given the chance to complete this fast-paced and rigorous program, I know I will be successful; my ability to complete a Masters in Biomedical Science, while working and volunteering, has equipped me with the skills necessary to excel in this program. I truly believe the program’s didactic curriculum and various clinical rotations, along with Clarkson’s values, will lead me to success as PA student and future physician assistant.
