Introduction
The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the relationship between density and time in a homemade pendulum. In order to investigate the phenomenon, the density of the hanging object is going to change, and by recording the time it takes the object to complete a period hanging from the pendulum. According to pendulum’s theory, the period should be the same because the force is restored due to gravity that will accelerate it and should bring it back to equilibrium position, however the period may be longer if the object is denser because it is having more speed as it goes through therefore will travel more distance and time consequently.
The pendulum will be released six times at the same angle and initial height with 6 different objects, whose densities differ. The time will be recorded as soon as the object is drop till it has completed a period (come back to its starting point).
* Research Question: How does the density of the hanging object will affect the period of the pendulum? * Independent Variable: The density of the hanging object. * Dependent Variable: The period of the pendulum (the time it takes to bring it back to its starting point). * Controlled Variables: * The length of the string at which the object is attached. * The release point at which the object is in equilibrium. * The pivot at which the hanging objected was attached.
Materials:
* Six objects with different densities * Chronometer to record the time * Six 16 cm long strings * Triple beam balance * Graduated cylinder * Meter stick * 1.70 meter high frame
