Thermal physics is the combined study of thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and kinetic theory.
This practical is done to measure the temperature drop of water over a period of time (30 minutes).
Research question-
What is the rate of temperature change over a period of 30 minutes?
Independent variable- time
Dependent variable- the temperature of water
Controlled variables- the amount of water in the calorimeter - The stop watch - and the thermometer used.
Theory- Temperature is a physical property of matter that quantitatively expresses the common notions of hot and cold. Objects of low temperature are cold, while various degrees of higher temperatures are referred to as warm or hot. When a heat transfer path between them is open, heat spontaneously flows from bodies of a higher temperature to bodies of lower temperature. The flow rate increases with the temperature difference, while no heat will be exchanged between bodies of the same temperature, which are then said to be in "thermal equilibrium".
Apparatus
-1 glass thermometer
* calorimeter
* stop watch
* and hot water
Procedure- 1) we took hot water from the lab We put it into a calorimeter and put a glass thermometer into it. 2) We measured the intial temperature to be 81 degree celcius. 3) Then we recorded the temperature every 2 mins. 4) And continued doing so for 30 mins.
Controlling the controlled variables-
We used the same stop watch throughout the experiment and we did not make any mistake in checking the temperature at the correct time interval.
We also used the same thermometer and calorimeter throughout the experiment.
