As discussed earlier, the extraction of the turmeric powder was done using various solvents at different temperatures. Different solvents provided extracts with different colour values at varying temperatures. At 50⁰C, the maximum colour value was found to be in the extract obtained using ethanol as the solvent. As shown in Figure 4.5, it could be clearly analyzed that different colour values are obtained on extraction with different solvents. Ethanol gave the maximum colour value i.e. 308.6; chloroform gave a slightly less value of 296.6; followed by methanolic extract giving 249.3 …show more content…
4.5 Physiochemical evaluation of turmeric oil
In this different parameters were analyzed. The tests performed and their obtained values have been shown in table 4.7. These values were very much in relation to the values mentioned in different research studies which have already been published.
Table 4.7: Physiochemical evaluation of turmeric oil

4.6 Antioxidant activity
DPPH scavenging activity
Figureure14 shows the DPPH radical scavenging activity of turmeric rhizome essential oil. Various concentrations of the oil were evaluated for their DPPH radical scavenging activity. The estimated IC50 values for the oil were found to be 3.1725 mg/ml and that of standard compound gallic acid is 1.38µg/ml and is inversely related to antioxidant capacity. This value was closely related to the IC50 values 3.227mg/ml found by Priya and co-workers in 2012. Figure 4.10 % Inhibition by …show more content…
It resulted in 20.11% curcumin with 337.6 color value. While comparing the dependence of the curcumin content, the results obtained with ANOVA proved that the solvent used had more impact than the temperature at which the extraction was carried out. The yield from hydrodistillation was 3.92%. GC-MS of the turmeric oil revealed that its chief components were Ar-tumerone and Curlone. Antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of turmeric oil and ethanol extract were compared, and the obtained results demonstrated that ethanolic extract of turmeric has more antimicrobial and antioxidant properties than turmeric
