Piaget Vs Vygotsky
As I see it, Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky are the two main authorities and dominant developmental geniuses in the field of developmental psychology. There are many resemblances between Vygotsky and Piaget’s work, which include these concepts: cognitive abilities develop in sequence and certain abilities develop at definite stages; children learn increasingly complex information and skills as they get older; and both theorists recognize the real role of heredity and growth of the brain and body (nature and nurture). In retrospect, I can see how all of this applies to Christopher and the other children in my world. These concepts seem accurate on a general level because these theorists give convincing although mostly indirect evidence to support their thoughts. I personally think that both apply to a child who has parents that encourages both approaches together as I did with Christopher. Other differences that I found through my studies of this subject include:
• Piaget believed that language is a result of cognitive development, but Vygotsky thought that language is key to cognitive development;
• Piaget concluded that cognitive development is driven by a child's innate ability to adapt to new circumstances, whereas Vygotsky deduced that cognitive development is prompted by social interaction;
• Piaget believed cognitive development is the same universally, whereas Vygotsky proposed that it differs across cultures and time;
• Piaget posited that children will only learn when they are ready, whereas Vygotsky believed that development could be accelerated to an extent with correct
