Imagine for a moment what it would be like to be abused; the low self-esteem, the broken trust, the suicidal thoughts. Unfortunately, many children, adults and elderly suffer from these emotions due to the abuse they endure at the hands of those who should love them. Although our society is aware of these abuses, we do not do enough to stop it or control it.
Children are the most vulnerable people in our society. A survey done in 2012 estimated “1,640 children died as a result of abuse and neglect…” (“Child Abuse Fatalities”). Many children who suffer from sexual abuse, isolate themselves and have outburst of anger. Gender also has a significant role in the way a child will respond to the abuses. Males tend to behave violently since it is in their nature to lunge their feelings outward.Women on the contrary hold in their feelings ,since Women tend to hide their pain internally. Which many times results to self infliction and depression(Gender differences). Women also are prone to self blame they believe that what happened to them was provoked by something they said or did. The problem with this is that this also creates anxiety, since they are afraid this can re-occur.(Gender differences) Women are more susceptible to PTSD than males who have suffered the same traumatic experience. It is much more difficult for a women to forget the fateful event then it is for male. It is important to understand that the victims coping skills will be delayed based on the fact that they were forced into an a situation that they did not want to be in. It is also important to note that not everyone reacts the same way, everyone is different and this may cause the detection of Sexual abuse to be troublesome. Adults and elderly abuse is the infliction of physical, emotional and/or psychological, sexual or financial harm on and elderly person or adult. Elder abuse can also take the form of intentional or unintentional neglect of an older adult by the caregiver. Elder abuse typical happens in facliates where the elders are in the hands of nurses. Charlotte Alter covers a horrifying case of three innocent women, by the names of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight who were kidnapped by a man named Ariel Castro. “Berry was kidnapped in 2003, while walking home from her job at Burger King, the day before her seventeenth birthday. DeJesus was taken in 2004, while she was walking home from seventh grade. A third, Michelle Knight, was taken in 2002 after leaving the home of a family member” (Alter).
