Pierre Paul Rubens The Three Graces
seriously ill and died in Antwerp in 1640. Pierre Paul Rubens was essentially known for his naked woman representations. “The Three Graces” for example is an interesting painting he made since it reflects the ideal image of the woman at that time. “The Three Graces” was made around 1635, it is an oil painting which is made out d the three primary colors yellow, blue and red. The art piece measures 220.5 cm x 182 cm and is now located in the “Museo del Prado, Madrid.” As it can be seen on figure 9, the painting represents three goddesses and daughters of Jupiter in the service of Venus, the goddess of love. All three are naked, plump, two being seen by three-quarters and one from the back. Rubens has shown them next to a fountain under a garland of flowers and a landscape background. The faces, round and imbedded, are inspired by classical sculpture, arms and calves are thick. The color and light variations accentuate the beauty of the bodies and the contrast between the landscapes of the background. After analyzing this painting, a conclusion can be drawn that at that time, the perception of beauty for woman from Western Europe, was shown when they would be plump and what we call now overweight. The reason why, was because “women with some meat on their bones, were also women who could afford meat on their plates”. …show more content…

The color palette of the painting is diverse, while red and warm earth tones dominate the painting. The light source seems to be in front of the left section of the picture while dispersing towards the right. The use of light gives the illusions of volume. The gradation of the sky is very exaggerated. The top is a dark blue and as it reaches the middle the sky is very light. The painting has a smooth finish and is very detailed. The flowers on the bottom are very intricate as well as the patterns of the people’s garments. Each face has a distinguished and unique appearance; no two faces are…

According to the museum placard about the painting, the work portrays a figure similar to the Virgin Mary and child. The Virgin Mary (identified by her red and blue garb and infant) is portrayed in a similar likeness to a mother figure called Charity. There is a Roman story of a daughter named Pero who breastfed her father while he was in jail to keep him alive and who was later released as a result of her unselfish act. (Maximus n.d.) Rubens also painted this scene in Simon and Pero, and so I believe that is why Rubens portrayed the Virgin Mary as Charity. (Rubens, Roman Charity 1612) The cherub-like figures surrounding her and the infant are putti (child-angels). The painting also has some symbolism. One of the cherubs has a bow and a heart on fire, similar to a cupid. Another has a torch to ignite love. At the bottom right corner of the painting, one of the putti has a bow and he is aiming it at some snakes on the ground. The snakes are…

This throne like box that the Madonna and Child are sitting on, is representative of them being a higher power. They are positioned above the viewer and everyone else expressing the power that they hold but their facial expressions show the humbleness of the two figures. This piece shows the sense of a maternal bond that becomes increasingly more prevalent during this time period. The relationship between mother and son is shown in this representation due to the more tender expression on the face of the Madonna. It is believed that di Paris was very interested in the naturalistic rendering of the subjects based on the painted details on their hair and faces and the careful placement of the drapery.…

The artist utilized oil and multiple layers of gesso on canvas to create his three dimensional piece of art. The Dancer At Pigalle’s represents a woman who dances in the spotlight on a stage. Her dress is spinning around in a circular flow. In this work, Servini is using a futurist style of painting. I have a feeling that I am inside the stage watching this woman performing ballet dancing. The canvas is developed with layers of plaster to be able to represent the dancer’s motion and dress by projecting them out into the viewer’s land. Light and environment act concurrently on the forms of movement. The work is a colorful representation of the body and the cloth of the woman as depicted. Her dress is pink and is printed with brown hearts. Her shoes are brown. She has black hair. While the painting does not reflect the real mood of the dancer, the bright colors and the gestures that the artist used on this painting reveals the happiness of this…
