Located out in the woods sits a monument to the legendary North American explorer Merriweather Lewis that stretches from Tennessee all the way down to Louisiana. Part of this park is a campground that is no more than ten minutes away from the actual monument. This campground features everything and everyone from the RV and traveling house to a campsite that is sprawling with tents. This is, however, situated about two to three hours away from La Vergne and can feature some difficult terrain. The long winding roads to the camp will feature many things but nothing is more prevalent or noticeable than the bathroom that is situated dead center of the campground. Once you enter, to either side of is a potential site to set up camp as many sites are available and can accommodate everything from an oversized RV to a host of two to three tents set up in one site alone. Due to the nature, the air can be extremely cool and crisp as it is a secluded location that is surrounded by trees on every side no matter where one turns to look and the various creeks and rivers only add to the…
In this book Bill Bryson is planning on hiking the entire 2,220 miles of the Appalachian Trial. He wanted to reacquaint himself with nature and his inner sense of self. In the beginning of the book he thought he would have to take this journey alone but he was joined by an old friend who he hadn’t talked to in a while. As he and Stephen Katz; his friend that had joined him started hiking the Appalachian Trial they were off pace and slow and they both hiked at different paces so they rarely hiked together. When I think about how slow and difficult the beginning was for them, it reminds me of how you will be as you begin your new journey, it will be completely new to you. There will be hardships there will be competition there will be new experiences that you will have to learn to deal with. There will be no one by your side telling you what turn to make next. They had a road map to tell them where to go and which way to turn but you do not, you have to make your own decisions and choose the path that you want to take without knowing the outcome or knowing where it leads.…
The Pigeon River flows through North Carolina and right here into East Tennessee. The Pigeon River got its name from an extinct bird, which migrated through the valley of North Carolina. Although, the Pigeon River looks nice, there is something extremely harmful going on inside the river. The long-polluted Pigeon River in Cocke County has not been “fishable” or “swimmable” for over 100 years due to pollution. The river’s water has turned dark brown, and has a terrible odor. The reason behind this beautiful river being polluted is the Blue Ridge Paper Company. The Blue Ridge Paper Company, once part of Champion International Paper, in Canton, North Carolina, is a primary source of Dioxin and matter pollution that has been discharged into the river. Not only has the Blue Ridge Paper Company polluted the water, it gets worse, a couple years ago in 2004, after…

In order to determine the enterprise value and recovery rates for each class of creditors implied by the April 2009 attempted exchange offer, we first had to determine the priority levels of the capital structure. We used Exhibit 7 in the Case documents to determine the priority levels of each class. The top priority class included the SFTP Revolver and Term Loan; the second priority class included the SFO Notes; and the third priority class included the SFI 2010, 2013, 2014, and converible notes; The lowest priority was the PIERS preffered equity followed by common equity.…
They all ate breakfast in the dining hall after that. The camp had a beautiful view of a tall Rock Face on the side of a mountain. Later that day, the camp staff brought all the campers to the town of Moorefield, where everyone boarded these things called motorcars, also referred to as speeders. These vehicles were once used by Railroad Maintenance employee's to ride out to remote work sites. The motorcars took everyone from Moorefield to the town of Romney, WV. Andrew, Anthony, Ramon and I all rode together, the particular motorcar they rode could only hold 5 occupants, including the operator. Noah had to ride a different motor car because of this. They seen many eagles along the picturesque route of the South Branch Valley Railroad. This particular section of the Railroad ran along another tributary of the…
Bill Bryson and Katz do not conquer the entire Appalachian Trail, but more importantly, they are able to conquer and overcome personal flaws while trying to do so. Bryson and his friend, Katz set out for a journey, their main intentions being to complete the Appalachian trail, and reconnect with nature. Throughout their journey, Bryson and Katz experience grueling days of long hikes and stormy weather, sometimes reaching below zero. Even though this seems miserable, and at times it was, the challenges helped both men to better themselves. Katz and Bryson gained a sense of pride by experiencing a harsh and deep pain, when hiking for long hours each day. By the end of their journey, they had become much more “slender and fit”(274). Even though they didn’t reach the end of the trail, physical strength was something they were able to leave with, and feel proud of. Looking back on the hardship and adversity the men faced was a significant accomplishment in itself, knowing that they were able to push through it, no matter how difficult.…
“Guilt is the hilt of the knife that we use on ourselves, and love is often the blade; but it's worry that keeps the knife sharp, and worry that gets most of us, in the end” (G. Roberts).Guilt is the strongest and most corrosive of feelings. Like acid, it can eat away at your insides and render you numb, just like it did to Kate. In the novel Crow Lake by Mary Lawson, the theme of guilt has a persistent presence and impact on Kate, Luke and Matt.…
“We have a long way to go Julie. We have to push ourselves to reach the site before dark.” While true that I worried about our reaching the site ahead of the dark, my real fear was the pain from the loaded backpack. Ten minutes ago I considered it just a temporary irritation, but now it had grown into a real strain on my back and shoulders, and it was an exertion to walk, even on level ground. Rather than yielding to defeat, I felt it best to travel another mile of two and possibly sedate the pain through a softer hiking stride. Not until I had exhausted every possible option, which included a dose of extra-strength ibuprofen, did I not want to surrender to my pain, or speak to Julie about my problems. Since she was ten, we've completed about 40-day hikes in the Smokies, totaling almost 300 miles, and most of that mileage, if not all, were tougher than any we would encounter on Lakeshore Trail.…
Camping and being in the outdoors has been a significant part of my life for the last eight years. As a child, I never enjoyed it much. Three years ago, my family along with four other families decided to take a trip to Glacier National Park. The sky-piercing mountains and the beautiful lakes urged me to explore the outdoors more. From hiking through the mountainous trails to driving up the mountains through the Going-to-the-Sun road, I finally began to realize the relief and soothing sense that nature had to offer. Despite the love I finally found in the outdoors, I was never the dedicated and…
I followed and Tim held the anchor position, last. The cloud cover continued to move into the area from below the mountain, and all the while I was keeping close tabs on it, I periodically attempted mental telepathy to possibly produce a glimpse of the surrounding peaks somewhere through the white layer. The chances still looked grim. After being in the vicinity of the lake for over an hour, I sensed Tim could be stalling, waiting for that lucky break in the clouds. If he was stalling, that I would have been okay with that as I’m sure a glimpse of Pillchuck’s peak would have been quite the spectacle. Ahead, a section of land jetted out to a point on the lake’s edge and something on it had caught Tim’s eye .Leaving the trail, I watched him navigate down onto the point at lake level where he began surveying the area. As I followed, I quickly understood what attracted him. The landscape and layout was another prime camp location. Our time on the point was short, gazing at the different views and taking pictures. Staging us looking into the sun, Tim took a few pictures of Holly and me, and in turn I snapped a few keepsakes of…
The best reward to hiking was always the food. We made time to eat at Dave’s BBQ, which was fantastic. I had pulled pork, french fries and sweet tea. The pork melted in my mouth. The funniest part was none of us had showered in more than 4 days. I’m sure we smelled like Wombats. Others eating that night were staring and scrunched their noses at us. It was obvious we were the only ones coming off a trail.…
Traveling on the Oregon Trail has been a journey that I do not think anyone can really prepare for. It is hard having to leave places constantly and leave our loved ones behind knowing we may never see them again. It is a hard journey on everyone, it is also hard being a women. We have to make sure that the children are well taken care of throughout this whole trip. Making sure the children are safe is a big job to do. Besides making sure our little ones remain safe, we women have to make sure our men stay strong so they may make sure we are safe.…
