The 40 developmental assets are experiences and behaviors that shape a young person's adulthood. These assets will lead to how a person grows up and what their future will consist of. The more assets someone has, the more likely they are to have a productive life. These assets also apply to people, who aren’t necessarily actual beings. In the brief novel The Pigman, John Conlan experiences numerous amounts of these assets. This story tells a part of the troubled teenage lives of John and his best friend Lorraine Jensen, and how meeting Mr. Pignati has a large influence on their lives. They deal with the majority of the assets, however a few are more apparent in the story than others. John will become a successful adult because although…
In chapter seven everyone except for Piggy and the littluns are hunting for the beast. After Ralph hurls his spear at the pig and the pig scurries away, the kids start to play and have what they think is fun. But, it is nowhere near innocent fun. It is violent and savage-like. They circle Robert and pretend he is a pig. They make squealing noises like pigs and begin to jab him as if he were a pig. They chant, "Kill him! Kill him!" They hurt Robert physically and actually harm him. This was not a joke. They are becoming savage, really savage.…
I was very excited, I was going to get a new guinea pig. My old one had died of old age, and the new one I was getting was just a few months old. I had bought him a few days ago at the York Fair, but had to wait until the fair was over. My dad drove me to the fair, and we went in to get him.…
In this book, written by Johnathan Kohl, we are given a rare and candid glimpse inside the educational system in the city of Boston in the 1960’s. As Kohl describes the treatment that minority students endured at the hands of their teachers, it becomes clear that the title of the book is an accurate depiction of the times. As we read about teachers calling students terrible names and treating minority students with contempt and disgust, it is apparent how the spirit of the students were slowly dying inside. Although this was over fifty years ago, this type of treatment still occurs everyday in schools all over the nation. Whether a child be a minority race, have a learning disability or have behavior issues, it is not uncommon for them to be treated in a way that negatively effects their self esteem, causes them to dislike school and eventually, little by little, takes away their hope. No child should be left hopeless. Everyone needs something to be proud of, whether it be one small talent they possess or just one person who believes in and respects them. It is the job of a teacher to build a child’s self-esteem and self-respect and above all, their hope for the future. Without hope, a child will not aspire or dream. There must be procedures in place to ensure that teachers know what is and isn’t acceptable in terms of interacting with children. I have experienced this first hand in my personal life. My son has Asperger’s syndrome. He can be difficult to handle. Because he misreads social cues he wold often misunderstand what his teachers were asking him and answer incorrectly. He repeatedly told me that his teacher yelled at him and didn’t like him. He wouldn’t even tell them when he was sick because he didn’t want to make them angry. One of his teachers screamed at him so loud at the end of the school day that he was literally shaking when he arrived home. I understood their frustration but I didn’t…

The young adult novel “The Pigman” was released in 1968 and enjoyed immediate success. The author, Paul Zindel, was born May 15 1936 in Staten Island, NY. He wrote 40 stories, and composed 8 screenplays.…
Overall respect in our society is pretty much overrated and now most people don't really care about what their children are learning in school as long as they're passing and some don't even care if they pass or don't. Children now in days are exposed to pretty much everything whether it's something they should or shouldn't see at that point in their age. It is still important that children under the age of 10 tend to not read those kinds of books because of the violence that is shown, if people keep making books like this later on they will start giving them books showing the real images and the real things that happened in the Cold War. Now in days with all the violence that's going on in the world already affects the children because they see it and they think it is a good thing to do because things like school shootings or any kinds of shootings are ok to happen, so think about what your children are starting to learn in school, and help prevent things like this from…
All the characters had importance and it was a big deal when a character died because it was given meaning through symbols. However, in another violent book for teenagers, The Hunger Games, killing and violence just felt like another way to advance the plot. The violence didn’t have a lot of meaning to it, and didn’t add to the book. Violence shouldn’t be violence for the sake of violence, it should add something to the book or film, or it can say something about the audience. For example, Jack’s savage manhunt for Ralph involves burning down half the forest, and the smoke actually allows for the British Navy to find them. Things like these allow for more meaning in a book and film, and allow the audience to decide for themselves how they feel about…
Do you want your kids to have bad influences from this book? Do you want them to be exposed to this material? The book, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton should be banned from this school for teaching kids bad lessons and it is inappropriate. First of all, there is under aged smoking. As well as young kids drinking alcohol. Second of all, there is a lot of violence and fighting, plus there are weapons being used in a bad way. They show people killing people or they might just get hurt.…
As Atticus said, “it's a sin to kill a mockingbird”, because they have done nothing to anyone but try to please. There are many people in the world and in stories that symbolize mockingbirds, that were killed innocently. There are not many mockingbirds in Maycomb County, but until Boo Radley showed up no one knew that he was a true mockingbird. Mockingbirds do nothing but try to please humans by singing, and try to help. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout goes through many hard times and learns what it is to be like a mockingbird, innocent. In the end of the book, she realizes Boo Radley is a mockingbird, just like the gray ghost, a character in a book Scout and Atticus read. Innocent.…
in the U.S. Which aspects of the book do you think people have found more objectionable? Do you find these aspects of the book off-putting? Do you think the book should be banned or censored? Do you think it should be taught…
There are too much violence that happened during the book. “I hack the Voron dagger into the side of his neck, right at the scar. Setrákus Ra gurgles. I slice again.” There are so much violence that there are even murdering people now. “Phiri drives the tentacle into the underside of Mark’s jaw and through the top of his head.” It is another sign of violence. The teacher may not want any or too much violence in the book the class is reading, so it makes it not a good book to be a class novel.…
Kean’s rationale for the use of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in the classroom rests in the historical aspects it illuminates about America, Mark Twain’s reputation, the novel’s relatability to youth, and the use of literary techniques. Kean believes that the novel is a central document for understanding American heritage. The novel, Kean claims, draws a picture of middle American the pre-civil war period. Kean believes that the stance of censorship only arises because the issues brought up are so painfully not resolved. He insists that readers are to sensitive and it causes them to misread, what he believes to be, a clear indictment of the old south as an approbation of the morality. Kean argues against the novels censorship saying it has…
Almost all of them are able to even go see an R rated movie by themselves, much less read about it in a class. This book was picked for educational purposes such as mental illness, love, and bullying. All things that one could encounter in their own daily life. Kids these days aren’t interested in reading much and this book is nationally praised for being able to grasp the attention of teens and now the parents want to sign off on the book. In 1-2 years, all the kids in that class will be graduated and in college, they aren’t going to hold parent meetings about whether they need to sign off on books.…
The pig’s head on a stick represents savagery. As we look at the pig’s head on the stick we think of this as bad. To the boys the pig’s head is good. They think that it will scare away any creatures that they don’t want near them, like the beastie. The older boys were getting convinced that there was the beastie out there. Simon thought that he saw the beastie. He was trying to tell Jack that the beastie was just a dead parachuter stuck in a weird position in a tree. Jack refuses to listen to Simon and he still puts up the pig’s head. Some of the boys don’t care about the civilization, they like savagery. “Ralph is like Piggy. He says things like Piggy. He isn't a proper chief.” (Chapter 8 Page50). Jack even has a chant about killing…
