Kingshaw. Another character I dislike is Edmund Hooper. Helena’s son Charles, who is constantly attacked by Edmund is a character who is pitied. Helena is the opposite of likeable, she is a horrible mother to Charles, since she never trusts him neither listens to him.
The reason I dislike Mrs. Kingshaw the most is because she, as an adult, should know how to act, should know what is wrong or right. In the book, she behaves like a child, depending always on Joseph, never being on her son’s side. A reasonable mother should and would trust her son first. The worst part is that instead of punishing both boys, Edmund and
Charles, when they misbehave, she punishes Charles and excuses Edmund. When Edmund and Charles are found in the woods, Edmund, as always, blames Charles for pushing him in the water and Helena does not even listen to Charles's side of the story. She sends his son to his room and says that she is disappointed of his behaviour. Another instance, when Edmund falls to the ground in the Castle, again Charles is blamed, and again Helena punishes her son. All she does is to please Joseph, because since she has been living with him she is happy and does not want to ruin it.
Helena’s action are really irritating and shows how childish her attitude is. The reader knows that Edmund is the one to blame, because we get to see him alone and know his feelings. Edmund’s wish is for the Kingshaws to leave his house and he takes advantage of
Helena because he knows she would favour him in order to please Joseph.
