“Maayong Pangagamhanan Alang sa Bukidnon”
PROJECT BRIEF
A. Official Project Name and Description:
PINIYALAN 2013 – Maayong Pangagamhanan Alang sa Bukidnon A Reporting Governance project initiated by Bukidnon News in collaboration with DXDB-Ang Bandilyo of the Diocese of Bukidnon and community partners.
B. Rationale (Draft)
Citizens participation in governance is at the core of the tenets of democracy. With laws pressing on transparent and accountable governance, this is expressed with even more stress. The news media plays an important role in helping communities ensure transparency and accountability with its independent monitoring and reporting thrusts.
Over the years, the community news media in Bukidnon have engaged in monitoring of local government units and elections. Because of lack of continuity and focus, however, sometimes the initiatives do not produce the expected outcome, especially in addressing the missions/vision of the organizations. One of the common desires of news organizations is to be able to report responsibly and accurately so they will be able to help citizens arrive at informed decisions on matter of public concerns.
Also, the news media alone cannot claim and pursue advocacy for transparent and accountable governance. There is a need to recognize that a multi-sectoral and collective effort of stakeholders is the best way push for it. Local governance, after all, is a power of the people, by the people, and for the people.
The news media’s role in that collective effort is crucial – to provide accurate, responsible, and comprehensive news and information to aid local government and the public in general of the dynamic task of community building.
