In the visual text ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, produced by Walt Disney an important character is Will Turner, we know this by the way he is cast as a loyal, caring, risk taker, and will never give up on what he sets for himself. Three key techniques used to portray Will Turner are, camera angles, sound effects, and dialogue, in a story about two extreme pirates that risk their lives to get the key for a chest so they can become captain of the sea.
One key technique used to portray the character of Will was camera angles. The camera angles used to show Wills loyalty are important because they show the mood and emotion of the scene. In the scene where Will is getting ready to go to the Flying Dutchman, a medium shot of Will looking into the distance to the Dutchman is used. The reason for this to show the intensity and stress that Will is about to go through. The sea is rough with huge waves like mountains and heavy rain pouring down from the dark, thundering skies.
Another technique to portray Will Turners character was sound effect. This is important because they add to the mood of the scene. When Will Turner challenges Davy Jones in a game of dice, thumping footsteps are heard together with slow, heavy music played by an orchestra. This builds suspense for the viewers.
Finally, a technique to highlight the character of Will was dialogue. Together with camera angles, and sound effects, dialogue adds to the role who and what a character represents. In the scene after Will had played dice with Davy Jones he said to his father “You fool it isn’t about winning the game”, this meant that it wasn’t about winning the game it was to see and know where the key was so that he could save the people he loved. From that bit showed how loyal he is and how big of a risk taker he can be.
In summary Will Turner is a loyal, caring, risk taker, who never gives up on what he sets out for himself to do I admire will Tuner because he showed me
