Pit In The Pendulum

In the “Pit in the Pendulum “ by Edgar Allan Poe the ere setting, vivid gripping imagery , and vigurative language creates the mood of tension. Through the use of a bleak setting Poe stirs up the mood of suspense. When examining the cell for the first time the narrator describes it as "the entire surface of this metallic enclosure was rudely daubed in all the hideous and repulsive devices to which the ... superstitions of the monks have given rise"(Poe 567). Examining the area the narrator is trapped in creates alarm in the reader and the Narrator. When Poe uses the words "hideous", and "repulsive" the reader grasps better just how unsettling the dungeon is. Similarly, Poe uses imagery that inspires fear in both the character, and the readers
