English 1220 “In the 70’s they blamed the Dobermans, in the 80’s they blamed the German shepherd, in the 90’s they blamed the Rottweiler. Now they blame the Pit bull” (Cesar Millan). Everyday pit-bulls face criticism due to their history, what people fail to realize is the breed is not born aggressive and vicious, just as humans are not born that way either. As a puppy grows up they should be trained and have necessary discipline when they misbehave and rewards for behaving. The owner is the one responsible for discipline, they are the ones in control and should take full responsibility for the way their dog behaves. Just as one does not want to be judged by their race, appearance or their past, what makes it okay to discriminate against Pit-bulls by their appearance and a nasty reputation owners chose to create for entertainment. Too often the Pit-bull breed is misunderstood due to myths and lack of knowledge, although facts and statistics prove the Pit-bull is indeed a misunderstood breed. It is clear laws restricting pit-bulls are not based on accurate information.
Every day helpless dogs are brought to shelters to be cared for due to neglect from their owners. According to Animal People Online it is estimated about 60% of pit-bulls that arrive to shelters are killed for various different reasons, such as aggression, illness or it can even be due to overcrowded shelters. Pit-bulls are the number one breed represented in the euthanasia rooms with aggression being the number one cause as to why pit bulls are euthanized, yet aggression can easily be avoided through proper training and care for the dog. In a study done by the American Temperament Testing Society (ATTS) they found that Pit-bulls tested with a passing average of 86.8%. While testing these breeds the ATTS tends to test the dogs stability, shyness, aggressiveness, etc. to see what the dog’s instincts are and how they react in situations while under pressure.
